Starting probs

Had my 1980 CD for a few years and always started well. Now the starter doesn't engage the flywheel or 'kicks out" at the first hickup. I used to be able to grind away and have it still engaged as it started to limp to life. I might say that I did try to time the IP last year. What is the classic cause of these symptoms. I should know better. I've been driving these since '92 and wrenching far longer. The early kick out befuddles me. (Yes, the glow plugs are new.)

I'm not sure what your question is here. Is the starter turning the engine?
