aux water pump on 85 300d
Can someone tell me what the aux water pump is for on the 300d? I recently replaced the one that was not functional. It had power but the impeller was not spinning.

The purpose is to make sure the climate control system has enough hot coolant. Mercedes found that in cold weather and in heavy city traffic where the engine was running at slow speed for many minutes (commute traffic, taxi applications, etc.) the main water pump didn't deliver enough hot coolant. The aux pump was added to take care of that complaint.
For those in warm climates the aux pump may not be needed. Many cars have failed pumps and the owners aren't even aware. It is also possible to bypass the pump with a piece of pipe; just remove the hose on either side and connect them together. In cold climates, of course, you need all the heat you can get.
