Yeah my door lock broke!

http://catalog.worldpac.com/mercedesshop/sophio/wizard.jsp?partner=mercedesshop&clientid=catalog.mercedesshop&baseurl=http://catalog.peachparts.com/&cookieid=28A1FAIFY28D1ASWSI&year=1987&make=MB&model=300-SDL-001&category=All&part=Door+Handle+Assembly

Anyone want to guess what a matching vin cut one, with the alarm runs at the MB dealer? I'm betting $250. To bad you just can't replace the tumbler.

I need a new tumbler for the ignition anyway so I'll order both in one shot, what the heck. They will probably both have to come from the fatherland so its going to take week or so.

The only problem is that now I will have one door handle that won't match. I may have to buy a new left rear, just so that side of the car matchs. I'll have to see how far off the color is.

Why can't you just replace the tumbler? Mine fell out on the driver's door on my 77 and I was able to reinstall it. Seems like you should be able to get a tumbler from a pick n pull and have it rekeyed to match your locks.

Ask Phil to quote it.
He can get vin matched keys & locks from Mercedes with a copy of your registration.

I'm going to call the dealer and see if I can order just the tumbler. I don't mess around with junk yards. Besides my friend tried calling a couple of the local ones once looking for a part for his E300D. As soon as he said its for a MB they said nope, don't get any of those.

I have a spare door handle in my basement, from a 420SEL. I just don't want to have to use two keys. My SD was set up that way and it was annoying.

I installed the remote locking system for this very reason. Cost: $54 Have had it in a year and it works great. Never need a key! And you can't tell its there, everything is hidden inside the door and dash, looks/works completely stock as well as with the remote.

A lot cheaper than a new lock setup from the dealer thats for sure.

My key lock still works, but in the winter it would freeze/not turn. So now I don't have to worry about it at all.

Same here- my passenger's side doesn't work at all, and the driver's side one is flaky in the winter. Easy to install and very convenient!

Nah I can't have broken things on my car, I have to fix it.

Remote lock for me is a meh feature. Doesn't do anything for me either way, and I don't have to worry about frozen door locks.

I don't really want to add remote door locks, its just another thing to break.

Dunno, but all my dealer was able to order for my SD was the entire assembly. Tumbler was not listed separately on any of his books (trust me, we looked).

I have a keyless entry/alarm which is pretty convenient, but having a broken lock would still piss me off enough to fix it correctly.

I could probably swap out the control box AND actuator for my remote locking system in about 35 mins if I had to. But I probably won't....they seem to be very reliable. I use it at least 6 times a day almost every day of the year, and it works as good now as it did a year ago. Nothing on mine is broken, the lock assembly still works fine, I just don't want to have to use a key. How low-tech.

What about if you have an alarm though? Will it trip it? I think the alarm comes off the tumbler, because I know if you just pull the door lock up and open the door it will go off. You have to unlock the car with the key before you can open the door or pop the hood.

No alarm system here....I have vandalism insurance.... Anyways, the worst I've had someone do to my car is key it, and there's nothing an alarm system (well...a normal one, my type of system would injure those people pretty badly) will do to prevent that.

I noticed the passenger side dor onmy car will not work with the key either. It locks and unlocks via the vacuum system, but not the key. It could have a different door on it, I suppose.

Well they are kind of pointless, but the factory installed it so its their.
