1984 300SD operating temperature?

Bought a 1984 300SD a few months ago. It's been very well maintained and has 164K miles. Lately it won't get up to 80C until I am cruising at 60 on the freeway. Day time temps have been in the low 40s. Smoking quite a bit too under heavy acceleration even when warmed up to 80C. Is this what other 300SD owners experience? Smoke is gray. I'm wondering if I have a bad thermostat. Any way to pinpoint if the thermostat is bad? Thanks!

I have had the same problem on my 300TD. It runs around 70C and drops to 60C on the downhills around here in the winter.. Have changed thermostats and it makes no difference.. so now I run cardboard on the radiator.. not a perfect solution, but it seems to help a bit..

Your t-stat is probably dead. Mine wouldn't go over 70 degrees or so, after t-stat it hit 100 degrees in the summer. Also your temp sender might be bad.

Sounds like a bad thermostat to me too. When I first got mine it ran cold in the winter, turns out the thermostat was installed backwards. With the correct thermostat it even runs at 80C in sub-zero (F) temperatures.

Change the temperature sender on the cylinder head as well. It's over 20 years old by now and they tend to send a low signal as they age.

Hmm, they're only about $15! I might have to do that sometime soon. Maybe I'll toss one into my next order.

Both of our SD's run about 65-70C when its cold out, and it takes a long time to warm up. Our 300D warms up quickly to 80-85C and stays there. I think I need a new t-stat. I'll have to look into it. However, it goes up to 82-85 in the warmer months and stays there...maybe its sticking.
