Are you absolutely sure it is nothing to do with the vacuum, boden cable, or lockdown switch? My car starts in 1st, is it supposed to or is it off center or something and thinking 1st is 2nd, 2nd is 3rd, 3rd is 4th, and 4th is neutral? That is what is seems like...

Some start in 1st, some in 2nd, depending on how the factory set them up. If it's a 602 with a 722.4, it's probably first gear start.
It's certainly worth a few minutes to adjust the bowden cable, vacuum modulator, fluid and filter. A viscosity improving additive may help you for awhile. Sometimes you get lucky. The reason that the 3/4 shift is a problem is that 4th gear requires both clutches to be pressurized, so it places the most stress on the hydraulics. The cause may be wear on the clutch or leaky internal seal, with the clutch pack seals being most common. If you put a gauge on it, I suspect you will find that there's a big pressure drop as you are engaging 4th. |

A '92 should start in 1st. All the diesels switched to a 1st gear start sometime in the mid 80s, certainly every one of the W124's should do it.
As Frank has said, and others on your multiple other posts on the forum, your transmission is likely worn out. No additive or adjustment will make up for wear. The vacuum nor the bowden cable are going to cause a "no gear" situation. |
