I'm suggesting someone do a DIY post naming parts

I'm thankful for the many people who answer questions on this forum. One thing that would be a big help for me, and I'm sure others as well who are not such advanced mechanics as some of you others, is for someone to do a post, to be placed on the DIY articles (if there's not one there already), with pictures and names of the parts.

There are times when I get replies to a post, but the replies seem to counter one another. Different people call the same part using either slangs, abbreviations, or different names than others would use, or sometimes less, saying "the round thing", when there's 5 round things, ...which one??

Would be great for people who don't understand repair stuff (like me), that they could say refer to picture of the turbo or whatever. There could be pictures of the brakes, turbo, injector pump, etc. It would also lessen the amount of people having to take pictures and/or describe something; the photos would already be on the forum.

Thanks,

Jeff 1991 300d

GREAT idea!!

That's a good idea. That way, people can reference pictures that are already done, and in a larger size than the crummy, puny 72 kb file size photos we can post.

Excellent idea Jeff!!

All hail jbach36!!

Order a free catalog from these folks; it has a lot of excellent exploded views of parts and names thereof.

Well, it's all a learning process

To a certain extent auto technicians speak their own language. And to fully understand and work on autos and to communicate with people you have to know the language. I think the same can be said about music. It has its own language. I think the Forum's "Buy Parts" is a wonderful place to start. Don't know the part? Wonder what it might look like? What could be easier than chasing down your particular model there, and the pictures are great. Then Benzs just gave us "Free" access to every model and all parts and assemblies made in the last 60 years. That goes back to 1946. Do you remember 46? I do, and it was a wonderful year in the USA. Matter of fact, I graduated from the Eighth Grade in 46, I didn't have a drivers licsence, but I did a lot of driving at that time, as we could always find some old clunker to drive around. Well, anyway to jbach and all the other learners, ask, use the resources, use search, make notes, and look at pictures and diagrams. Then try to figure out, what makes this assembly work. It is just a case of study, study, study. But it is not like going to tech class. No, do this on your own time. Get that printed service manual on MB, I got mine on Ebay for about $20.00. It is not the greatest, but keep it in your car and read through it when ever you have a little time and you will learn a lot.

Their website also has the exploded views. It aided my learning curve. The Factory service manual CD ROM also helps, even though every picture is not the greatest.

I went to performanceproducts4benz.com, I didn't see any exploded views, just pictures of parts. Where can I see exploded views?

First get a FSM. Then when someone talks about a part that you are unsure of look it up. Or look it up on the buy parts tab here, very often their is a picture.

Answer:

I am working on this in my (Laughter) spare time.

There are some names in the Factory Service Manual (FSM) that are NOT the same in EPC.

There is an I.B.P. (individual parts breakdown) at www.epc.statkinfo.com. They were offering a one year free subscription, I don't know if they still are, but it is worth the money if they are not.

I noticed that the schedule of parts names and numbers on the Russian website often calls several parts by the same name. I guess that if you use the correct number, you're okay, but it's still a bit confusing.
