Bad IP shutoff valve - confirmation please
All;
1985 Cali-spec 300TD, and as the weather has gotten cooler (Williamsburg, VA), the car no longer shuts down in response to the key. Spent part of this afternoon in the driveway, Mity-Vac in hand. Measured the vacuum at one of the taps on the main vac line to the booster, ~ 23 in. of Mercury. Disconnected and plugged various ports, and still could not get the car to shut off. Disconnected the brown line from the shutoff valve, connected it to the Mity-Vac and with the key in the on position, no vacuum. Turned off the key, and saw a reading of 21 in. of vacuum. Believe that this should confirm a bad shutoff valve, but am deferring to the experts on the board. The one strange aspect of this is that in warm weather, the car shuts off (or did) normally. It's almost like the ambient heat results in a leak sealing itself, and the colder weather keeps this from happening... Thanks in advance. Dave Stack |

Pull a vacuum directly on the shut off valve with the Mity Vac with the engine running and see what happens. If it doesn't shut off, bad diaphragm on the shut off valve.

cold weather might cause all that rubber to shrink up and harden, causing an existing leak to be worse than it would if it were warm outside... I agree, pull a vac on the valve itself and see if it shuts off, then you will know.
