My banana rail appears to be loose. (84 300SD)

In my quest to find the ticking noise in my motor, i changed the timing chain tensioner. this did not fix the problem. Just now i was looking at the engine with the valve cover off and noticed that the timing chain tensioner does not line up with the spot on the banana rail where its supposed to. It definitely is not right where can i tighten the banana rail?

The proper term is "tensioning rail".

It does not get tightened in the conventional sense. It pivots on it's lower mounting bolt. The chain tensioner forces the rail into the chain and keeps tension on the chain.

There is no adjustability short of replacing the rail, however, it's unlikely to solve your issue.

hhhm maybe the problem lies in the new tensioner. I will try to put some pictures up.

The head of the old tensioner has a deep half circle groove in it. The head on the rail appears to be worn at an angle so the new tensioner only touches it on one side. I looked at my parts engine and it has no side to side play and lines up right.

You'll probably need a new rail for them to line up properly then.

I think i will do that before driving it anywhere. The side to side play is so bad that one side of the chain is not even on the rail.

Yikes, I agree, don't run it that way, it'd snap for sure!
