What rpm are you at at 65 mph?

For my '85 300td, I'm at close to 3,000. Maybe 2,750 or so.

Just seems kinda high. Is something screwed up, or is this normal? None of the W123s have overdrive, do they?

What do other cars cruise at?

No infact you have a 2.88 rear end making it lower than normal for the 3.07ers . The 85 is most efficient at 75mph btw, drive your car like it was meant to be (laws be damned).

Yep, be thankful you've got the '85. You're turning about 2750 at 65 mph.........everybody else is closer to 3K.

The car also has 119k on it though

Hi everyone,

This is something I've also wondered about. Does anyone know what it would be for a '79 300D non-turbo? (Not all of us have a tach ) I believe it has a 3.46 rear end.

Thanks for the info and this great forum!

I have an 84 300cd-t. does that mean i have a 3.07 Diff? What is the lowest ratio diff available to fit my car? it just seems like it can be a lot more efficient than it is. i have often wondered why these things are geared to rev so high at relatively low speeds. what kind of difference does a 5-speed make? is that the only option?

2.65 gets me a nice 3000RPM at exactly 75. Really helps with the noise and fuel economy. The road noise is louder than the engine at 75.

I guess my E300D has the same differential as that's what I get or about 2600 RPM @ 65 MPH. My TDI has an even lower ratio and it spins at about 2100 RPM when going 65. Generally the best fuel economy is achieved at 50-60 MPH.

I'm at like the usual 2750 for 65 mph and at 75 its probably at 3200 ish..It doesn't roar but it is noticeable.. I need a hood pad, that would quiet it down
