oil change interval
Was wanting to question at what interval you might be changing your engine oil? If you are using like Mobil 1 5W-40 turbo diesel truck oil in your Mercedes Benz. Are you still doing 3K as the time frame???

I do 4k, it depends on the engine. If you're running a 4cyl 616 (240) or 5cyl 617 (300) engine 4-5k is the highest you will want to run it due to high soot levels produced by those engines.
On the newer engines: 603 6-cyl, 602 5-cyl, 601 4-cyl and the more recent 606 6-cyl engines you can probably go 5-7k without worrying about it as they run cleaner and make less soot. Shell makes a lower cost synthetic (Shell Rotella-T 5w40 Synthetic) that can be used also, more practical if changing the oil more often. I have decided to use that oil and change it every 4k instead of the Mobil 1 every 5k. Still saves a little $$, and its likely better for the engine. On the newer engines where you can run the oil 6-7k, the Mobil 1 might be a better choice as its a slightly better oil.

The newer cars do close to 10k mile intervals. Always a good idea to validate your interval via UOA to make sure you're not over-working the oil. I think the newest diesels can go 13k - 15k miles when running the proper oils.

Sooty is right
Yeah, my oil turns dark again, seems like almost immediately after I change it. Compared to my wife's gasser Subaru, which stays nice and clean for hundreds of miles.

I have gone full circle on oil type and change intervals based on some recent oil tests reading I have done, I am back to using Delo 400 and at 3000 miles.

Go by whatever the owners manual recommends for your car.

2.5-4K for dino and 5-8k for synthetic on the 617.

I guess I am paranoid. 4k-ish on Rotella Synthetic for all our cars. Our cars do a majority of their driving in the city though, and that makes a difference. Probably close to 85% for both of my dad's cars....and about 65% for mine.

I change my oil/filter on an approximate 4000k mile interval. I'm using Mobil Delvac, it seems to hold better pressure at idle than Rotella. But in the grand scheme of things,(relatively speaking of course) oil is cheap and it's your engine's best friend.

Yes! Another oil thread!!!!!!!!! How long before it gets nasty? FWIW, I change my 240 every 3k on Rotella dino.

We can liven things up by adding oil filters to the oil thread

I go 4000 miles or six months, whichever comes first with Delo 400 on all my vehicles except for the Accord on which I use M-1 and change every 5000 miles. For my Honda RC45 bike, its Delo 400 at 2500 miles.

Does everyone buy their oil at the local parts store? If not, where?
