what do you guys think?

http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/car/485243654.html I have an extra w123 tranny in good shape, but im not sure how long it would take the horses from the 617 engine. How hard would it be to rebuild this transmission? and what are some of the problems inherant with this year?

junqueyardjim 11-27-2007 10:55 AM

Was it behind a 616

If it came out of a 240 D, it is bound to be a little less transmission. It might go further then you think. It might not. Depends a lot on how you drive it. The car looks good, wish it wasn't 2400 miles away. I think I would own it and find a good transmission or rebuilt transmission for it.

That is certainly an interesting color for an SD.

well looking at the bumpers maybie its a grey market color, if i put this tranny into it im goign to be driving it very very easily. and maybie its just a b-2 pistion! that would be awesome. Anything i should know about this car before i bite? climate control system? lube points? its a w124 chassis right?, so anything really from w123 knoledge will be comperable to this or am i wrong?

ForcedInduction 11-27-2007 11:36 AM

It is a 79 so it is a W116.

At $900 I'd bite it. Ask the guy if it is drivable. If it is, it may be repairable.

It's a W-116, the predecessor to the W-126..........an S class vehicle.

The thing to look for is rust. If it has no rust (would be unbelievable), then it's worth more than the asking price.

If I was out there, I'd certainly take a look at it.

rust in washington is nothing more than surface, im not worried about it in the least. What i am worried about is whats expensive on this car lol.

EDIT: Just called him, origonal interior and exterior power everything ac WORKS has 150k miles on it and he says that the tourque converter is out in the tranny. Now my question is, will a tourque converter from a 1983 240d tranny work in this 300sd? and how long do you think it will last?

If that cars been in Seattle most of its life it has rust. The only question is how much and wether or not it's a factor in it's desireability. The color is odd but there were many more colors that Mercedes used than the relatively few mainstream ones that showed up here. Could be original or a repaint. Being a 116 it's worth taking a look at but it needs to be looked over very carefully..

I've seen a light purple 116...WINCE

fahrgewehr2 11-27-2007 05:52 PM

Hey!

Nothing wrong with that color...

Looks like mine.

I wouldn't fool around with a 240 tranny or torque converter in the heavy sd.
The color while not common does not look wrong for the age imho.

The colour I have seen before, but I'm thinking it is the low set winter sunlight that is giving it that shade tinge.

If you're not concerned about rust, you've never owned a w116. They rust like no other Mercedes, and faster than quite a few other vehicles. Check the jacking points, wheel wells, and inside the truck where water can collect.

It might rain a lot here, but we don't salt the roads. Rust is unavoidable, but it's frequently limited to surface rust around here. I few years ago I purchased a '69 Dodge that still had the original exhaust system, and aside from a cracked manifold, needed no exhaust repairs at all. The car spent its entire life in Seattle and Tacoma, was driven all year, and was never garaged. Our 300D is fairly solid as well, and is a Northwest car.

And like I said, it's a w116. It has nothing to do with the weather, it has to do with this chassis.
