I'm confused..... engine head

finally, I just took the engine head off of my 1985 190D. There seems to be some hot spots or something. (I can't really explain, there is pictures) On the head it seems to have a bump or metal. The gasket has a depression in that spot. I looked at the new head gasket to see there is a hole in that spot. I poked a hole in the gasket and it went right through. Why are they different and what do I do? What are those holes and why where they blocked off?

I don't think this made any since but any help would appreciated Thanks

the PO could have installed the gasket from a slightly different engine. Perhaps a 601 variant from 84? Either way, just triple check to make sure your new gasket is the correct part number for you application and install it. Those holes appear to be coolant passages. Are you sure it was actually sealed off by the gasket and not just clogged by the crap in your coolant from your head gasket being bad?

Take the old gasket off the block and clean the area good. Then lay the new gasket down and if those holes line up do the same to the head. If they line up with passages in the head, I would agree the head gasket installed was not the right one. No one would use a head gasket to block off coolant or oil passages. Why did the head have to come off your engine? Jim

I'll try that

There was oil mixing in the coolant

A few questions on the 190D

Been working on it for little more than a month

I'll tell you what i find out.

I talked to the owner. He said the head gasket has never been replaced.???
