300D starter Removal from top how to?

I was wondering on 1982 300D turbo which way the starter would come out from the top. I tried running it agianst the fender and the turbo but it is just barely too big or not enough leverage on my end one anyone care to take stab at which way is easiest to remove it from the top?

Comes out the bottom, not the top as far as I know. You need to have the wheels off the ground and move them back and form to change the orientation of the steering rods to find the hole it comes down thru. Some people have removed the steering stabilizer rod but I don't think this is necessary. Might be easier with right front tire removed?
Perhaps it comes out the top also but it definitely comes out the bottom.
I have a vague memory of someone posting that they got it out the top but it required removal of the battery tray. Anyone else remember that?

It's very easy to remove from the top.........takes 30 minutes.............cables right in front of you..........

.............but.........

..........you've got to remove the manifolds/turbo to do it.

When a new starter was in order for the SD, I took it to a mechanic, he has a lift, much easier. $60 poorer and a couple of hours later...done.

I'd pay $60 in a heartbeat to avoid laying on the cold cement floor and trying to wrestle the starter out from the bottom.

Move closer, there's a fella that's pretty good, and pretty cheap.
