722.315 tranny ?s
Hi all-
well, the other day on my way home, a heard an unusual sound. so upon inspection, which ended up with putting the car on jackstands and running thru 1-2-3 gears, I think that the rear output bearing on my tranny is going out. there is a chance that it is the carrier bearing, but that is not even 2 months old. it was pressed on by a shop, even. I haven't had a chance to drop the driveshaft yet, but will tonight or tommorow. the tranny shifts great- no slipping, no other reason to want to rebuild it. does leak a bit out the drivers side- Piston/valve cover?? the car has 297K. If it is the output shaft bearing, I would guess that my options are to: 1.R&R the complete tranny- being the most $$, possibly the longest lasting.any recommendations on shops in the twin cities? places to aviod(ADSITCO?)? 2. find a used unit and cross my fingers.(anyone got a decent unit in the midwest?) 3. replace the bearing? Is this a possiblity? A DIY? Can it be done without dropping the tranny? Is it worth it, or should I go deeper? Am I missing any options? I am prolly not gonna junk the car until I get at least 300K Well- I hope it is just a bad carrier bearing. I will update as soon as I know. -3*F windchill outside this morning, and the garage is full of stuff, w/no heat at the moment.

well- Finally got around to dropping the driveshaft. It is the carrier bearing that I just replaced this Fall! I even paid a shop to press this on so I wouldn't screw it up. well- just goes to show its better to do it yourself.
At leats it is only a $10 bearing. I did manage to get the old one off, now need to source one locally. on Sunday.

That is really great
Before I read your second post, I thought surely that has too be the new carrier bearing. I put mine on by myself a couple of months ago, and it went on quite easy.

yeah, it is good news.
Did you use a bit of 1 1/4" pipe and a hammer to install the bearing? seems like it would work to install the new bearing. the only thing is that the shield what goes on first is ruined. kinda looks like it may have been what took out the bearing. then my removal method did not do it much good.(hammer and drift) I am going to try the 3 dealers in town, but I do not expect it to be in stock. If I cant get it, is it really that important to have? I kinda need my car, cant wait a week for parts, anyways. it would be on the rear of the bearing- seems most anything that could do damge, which these lil' guards would protect, would be from the front of the driveshaft/car.
