Helpful gas station employee

Years ago I had one of the first VW diesels. Driving through Tennessee, I pulled into a trunk stop and started pumping from the truck pump. The helpful guy at the counter hit the emergency shut-off so I wouldn't damage the car.

I've had very few conversations about my diesel at the pump. I can only recall one at the moment:

ME: *filling up*
SOME GUY: Is that a diesel?
ME: yeah.
SOME GUY: That's bad ass!!! *drives away*

It wasn't at a gas station but I had a good MB diesel conversation with the owner of a 300D and his girlfriend at Food Lion one night a week or two ago. It was 9:00 or 10:00 PM and there weren't that many cars out there, and I had just pulled into a space when I noticed the 123 over there, so naturally, I pulled around to get a look at it. Parked one space down from it and they got out at the same time I did.

Had a similar meeting at Wal-Mart with a 300SD the week before that.

Here at ASU, just driving around, I've noticed at least four or five students and one or two teachers driving these things. Haven't managed to actually speak to but two of them yet... but here's the list so far.

1. Beautiful white w116 300SD turbo.
2. Student's 300SD w126
3. Professor's 300SD w126
4. A student driving a rod-bender SDL! Seems to be in good shape. Sounded good when I heard it idling at a stop light.
5. A w123 300d
6. A w123 300d with euro headlights (but a missing hood star...)
7 and 8. 240d. Both automatics.

There's also about two e300s trundling around the place.

I would say that while I had the '00 NB TDI that I have been told or had about every thing mentioned here said or done to me. The exception has been the folks acting threatening, but then I'm 6'5" and 300 lbs and when standing beside a little VW New Bettle I looked like a giant, so maybe that is why.

However when driving the MB's I've never had anyone be anything other then polite, maybe a tad uninformed about the ability of the car to keep up with traffic. I have however been asked if they will actually run on veggie oil.

Had a comment that I was really proud of,some older fellow drives through the service station and pulls back around to fillup at my island,I noticed his ride was a vw with the lightly noticable diesel clammer. He commented breifly after getting out to splash the tank that he was driving a 300d in Germany in years past and had given it to a relative before leaving for the states. Many good miles later it still resides in the garage of said relative .As I got in my car and started her up I told him" heres to old diesel cars" and he gave me the thumbs up.

Couple years ago I was filling up my Isuzu pick'em'up with diesel. Some guy came up waving $2000 in cash. He wanted to buy it on the spot.

Nope, sorry dude, not enough $$.

When Iam fill my Datsun pick`em`up with Diesel it blows peoples minds Iam filling it with diesel. did you convert it? No. It came this way from Japan. really? yes. do you want to sell it? No! I didn`t know these came in Diesel. You probably wern`t born yet when I bought this back in 81, or were still in diapers.

I fill up the Mercedes, and it holds 34 gallons with the tank in the trunk. then I get questions why the fill up is in the trunk. then when I tell them I get over 900 miles per tank. I can drop $100.00 in this thing w/o any trouble.
I`ve meet some really interesting Mercedes people at the pumps. I always tell them about the the Forum and the interesting people here .

Steak house - Stake out

Out of town dining, noticed a nice MB on the way in.

On the way out a couple was just in front of me and unlocked the MB, parked nose into the restaurant. So "obviously" I could not see the back end.

I said, "Hey that is a really nice looking 350SDL", which it was. (I know rod-bender, but my brother had one and it was sweet until totaled by somebody in St. Louis)

Totally freaked the guy out, "How did you know?"

Then a nice conversation and on our way.

Post Hey Now Fellas ~

As both a Diesel mechanic and (long long ago) a gas island attendant , I could spend hours telling horror stories of average boobs filling their gassers with Diesel and then going nuts when it stopped running so take it easy on folks who are trying to be helpful .

The average driver has nearly -zero- awareness of their vehicles , unlike A. Dieselheads in general and

B. anyone who's on this board .

I remember the Japanese Diesel cars & pickups , here in La La Land (home of fruits & nuts) Pepsi Co. bought a whole fleet of Datsun pickups , when they came up for sale they all instantly vanshied south of the border , I know of quite a few that were driven to Guatemala where Diesel powered cars & light trucks are worshipped....

The Isuzu Diesels were not reliable and NO ONE , not even the dealer mechanics knew how to service them , more's the pity as my BIL in Guatemala City bought a four door sedan new and he loved it , here Stateside most were junked in less than 6 years .

I'm always interested at how many rod-benders are out there and seemingly doing just fine. Natalie's (my 300SD-driving friend) grandparents drive one, and love it. They've got nearly 200k on it, have always had it serviced by (the dealer?) and don't seem to have any trouble. I asked them if it used oil and they said no, so I just left it at that.

Pulled up to the island next to an Isuzu diesel pickup a few months ago, I was already using the diesel nozzle. Watched him fearlessly grab the kerosene nozzle and fill up with that. Said it didn't hurt a thing. I kind of believe him... except all the kerosene in NC is dyed and road-illegal, so i wonder if he'll ever get caught burning it. Nice enough little diesel.

I have run it before with no problems for the truck when I was empty and no diesel available.

I guess I was thinking about the "lack of lubricity" argument. I've always thought they were close enough that in a pinch it would be fine.

Why do folks leave diesels idling when they fill up? Is this a preferred method and if so why?
