79 300D radiator replaced- tips

Bought a Valeo radiator. Seems to be made in Holland , sez holland ontop(?).

Anyway, this is a good oem fit. Removal of radiator is basic like what you read in Haynes etc. books.

Not much trans fluid is lost (auto trans) when disconnesting the trans coolant hoses. Pre-soak with liquid wrench. Put sandwich bag or condom over open hose end and point it upward. No trans fluid gushes at all.

Rad drains, pull clips off carefully. jiggle fan shroud around as needed to clear work space. no need to remove. Loosen the bottom driver's side oil cooler slip-clip that holds down the radiator bottom. (rad has slits on side to slip onto clip.) do not remove the bolt unless you want to spend lots of time nashing your teeth lining it up to the attached nut later.

Do remove the top slip clip and bolt completely.

Once ready install new radiator. Slip it down over the oil cooler clip. Install the retainer clips at front top. then You need to get under the bottom slip-clip with a thick screw driver or pry bar.
Have one person hold down the radiator top while other aligns level the slip clip and uses pry bar to force the clip up the radiator side -slits until it is seated level.

The retighten the bolt. Not too tight.Don't want to bust your new radiator's side.
Now fit on the top oil cooler-to-radiatior slip-clip and see if the bolt aligns with the attached nut. If not, get a plier and gently crimp down the bottom ends in order to level the sides of this clip. When you removed it, it may have spread the sides apart a hair. Then your bolt will align with nut thread w/o stripping.

You may find that the oil cooler wiggles a bit loose on the new radiator. I found a horse shoe shaped washer and installed just behind the nut on that top slip-clip. Then tightened the retaining bolt just enough. That filled the small gap and held the two cooling cores tight.

I also had to shave a tiny bit of excess plastic from the edges of the filler opening in order to slip the rad cap on.

recheck hose clamps. do not over tighten. recheck trans fluid level. burp car.

Nice radiator. Just like the old Behr.

2 guys= 1 hour. no need to jack car up for height.

How's the tanks on the Valeo? Plastic? What about the filler neck.........thin plastic?

Compared to the known Behr..........what's it look like?

The replaced behr had plastic top chamber AND plastic filler neck. The hose necks were plastic. The bottom chamber was also plastic.
The Valeo is the EXACT same as the Behr D9.
The trans cooler threaded nipples are brass. The core is brass/copper. It looks to be a good radiator. A member mech-tech claimed Valeo was OEM more so than Nissen or csf. Nissen is better quality than CSF. CSF is all metal but they have quality control issues and higher fail rates. I checked that one out personally. Chose Valeo. Behr was not available.

It has a lifetime warranty besides.

Some mebers claims their old Behr is all 100% brass/copper. Not mine.

Fastlane sells Valeo but I was in a pinch and picked one up locally at a good price and warranty.

Also the Valeo is perfect drop in for behr. Cosmetically the same. And the CSF had a bit of side frame difference. Don't know about the Nissen.
easy install
