Best Brand North East Diesel for MB's (Hess, Citgo, MOBIL, etc.)

I live in NY and wondering what other owners like to run in their diesels.

Do you guys like one over the other? Notice any difference in running or mileage?

Just curious!

Thank you.

Brand doesn't seem to matter as much as freshness. you want fuel from a high volume retailer like a truck stop.

Most likely all the station brands are serviced from the same refinery.

What differences are there in diesel fuel sold at ordinary gas stations? I've only bought a couple of tankfuls so far and haven't noticed anything that differentiates diesel other than the brand name.

Around Boston, except for highway rest stops (very pricey), Hess stations seem to do the highest diesel volumes and consistently have the lowest prices.

Check the "Born on" sticker. Oh, wait, I think that's on beer . . .

This is another one of those "questions" that's virtually impossible to answer unless you are able to sample each batch of fuel prior to purchase.

As noted, the fuel tends to originate from a single local distribution point. A noteable difference may be when you see "premium" diesel vs. regular diesel fuel. This may not be so much of an issue since the introduction of ULSD since the fuel has to be additized to bring it up to the ASTM standards prior to leaving the depot. The additization formula is likely to be different depending where the fuel is being dropped. Which is best? Very hard to determine for the diesel auto driver.

I'd say that the cleanliness and turnover of the fuel is more important since all fuel has to meet ASTM standards. You can drop 1st quality diesel fuel into filthy, water-laden tanks at a cruddy station with little to no turnover and have all sorts of fun... Think about it.

I make it a point to buy all diesel fuel from a single location that has very high turnover, when possible. It's a SHELL station, btw, and they get fuels several times/day. That's how much they sell.

Hess also claims to not use oil sourced from the middle east.

I use only Iraqi fuel in mine. I want to feel like I'm getting SOMETHING for my tax dollars.

Yeah, I think HESS is gettin oil from around the globe via the mega-refinery in USVI.

We can buy IRVING and that's Canadian, so there are a few choices. In reality, only a small portion of our fuels come from the Middle East nowadays.

CITGO, or Chavez-Fuel, is cheapest by about $0.20 per gallon in CT, and it was the same in Massachusetts around Fitchburg when I was traveling that way. Cheapest usually translates to freshest. But I do get better results when I fill up on highways in NJ and use Mobil or Exxon. Jim

I've only filled at a Hess Station 1 time, at the one in Zephyr Hills Florida. I think I paid around $2.29 a gallon or so....back in Mid March. Those were the days.

Don't have those up here.

We have:

Mobil, Marathon, Citgo, Shell, Speedway, Rich, BP (not many though), A few Sunoco, and Meijer and other local store gas stations.

I go to speedway because I have a credit card with them that saves me a ton of money on fuel. I get a $50 gift card this month!

X2 I have been running that crazy SOB's fuel for years. I don't hate him enough to pay extra for Mobil.

While I'm currently in the northeast, my 300D stays in the northwest. I get fuel from the biggest Arco station in town, down by the port where all the trucks are. They have a separate diesel island with at least 10 dedicated diesel pumps just for the trucks. Unfortunately all the nozzles are too big to fit in my car, so I have to fill at the car diesel pumps with all the gassers. I always see at least a couple large trucks there at any time, so I would assume they have huge turnover. And they're the cheapest in town 95% of the time. My only beef with Arco is they charge you a fee to use debit/credit. That just means I have to stop at the ATM that's on the way to the place anyways

Fuel

'Almost all the fuels we get here come from Argentinian or European refiners
Via Enmark (Colonial Oil)...'comes in by ship.
Colonial has reciprocal deals with all the majors for fuel exchange in other
markets. They just add the additive package(s) for the brand being delivered
[BP,Mobil,Shell,Chevron,Etc.,Etc.]to the fuel before it leaves the Terminal.
'With Jet fuel,RUG,Diesel...it doesn't matter, the proper additive is supposedly
put in the fuel before it leaves the Terminal.

You'll love this...it has been suggested that ULSD in this country cannot meet
the federally mandated lubricity standards (backwards compliant...'means
ULSD has same lubricity as LSD)for two reasons:
1.The Jobbers/Wholesalers are pinching pennies and not adding enough of the
extra lubricity additives to the ULSD...'figuring nobody has the money or lab
capacity to test the fuel.
2.The Domestic base stock refined ULSD does not start out with refined diesel
But the equivalent of Bunker "C"(or worse).'Same rational as above.
