All W124 diesels in the USA have a 2.65 ratio, from 1987-1993. Only the 1995 E300 has a different ratio... that has 2.87 gears.

Doesn't the 95 have a different trans that makes up for the 2.88? Don't remember if it has a 5-speed auto or the old 4. Or does it just have that rear end to compensate for the lack of a turbo?

Nope, same 4-speed auto trans. It has the 2.87 gears partially to make up for the lack of a turbo (less torque), and also because the 606 engine has a significantly higher redline (something like 5600-5700 instead of the usual 5150 on most 602/603 engines). The DOHC head is probably responsible for the increase in high-rpm ability.

If it had a 5-speed auto, the gears would need to be more like 3.27 or 3.46... bummer MB never offered that in a 124 diesel.
