Pulled the turbo off last night, not too bad of a job (1 hr). I the wastegate moves with compressed air, but there must be a leak in the diaphram, as I also get a pretty substantial bit of air coming out of the little port next to the valve. Or is this normal. At any rate this is not causing the smoke as its a pretty small hole and the actuator was disconnected without any change.
I guess I can cross that off the list now.

Is your turbo a Garrett or KKK? The Garrett wastegate diaphragm should be sealed, and should have no leakage, and can be tested with a Mity-Vac. The KKK is not sealed, has a "controlled" leak though a small hole, and cannot be tested with a Mity-Vac.

I believe so, yes it should. I know this for a fact on the 603, and I would have sworn the 617 was the same design. That might explain the 10psi limit, eh?

And the winner is...

Lance. So I adjusted the valves a few weeks ago, and the smoke diminished (only three tight valves). Also the boost comes up a little more, but it still does not seem normal. I drove it a little with the exhaust pipe disconnected to see what that would do. Interestingly enough the boost came up a lot faster.
So, the next question is can the muffler (or resonator) get plugged up with soot? I am assuming that this is a remote possibility, but thought I'd see if this has happened to anyone.

Yeah, I just saw that thread. I have been thinking about removing the muffler for some time now.

It is not obnoxiously loud and the low end torque is amazing.

I deleted the middle muffler (resonator) from my 124, but kept the rear muffler. I'll be replacing it with a 500E Remus muffler later on, when the whole exhaust gets upsized as part of a SuperTurbo project...

I'm just getting back to this issue. Symptoms: little to no acceleration above 3500 rpm, black smoke, low boost pressure <10 psi at full load, with wastegate disabled.
What I've done:
Valve lash
injection timing 27 BTDC
Compression: 400-410
Injectors
Chain stretch 2*
Air filter
swapped IP

What else can I check?

I completely removed the air filter at one point, and that made no difference. I also suspect the turbo. Maybe I will have to put in a pressure gauge and see what kind of back pressure I have before and aft the turbine.

White smoke is unburnt fuel alltogether, black smoke is partially burnt fuel. meaning that either too much fuel is being injected (lets save that for last..) Or, not enough air is avalible on the combustion stroke to burn all the fuel. So i say, check your air filter and do an oil change/valve adjustment and fiddle with the wastegate abit. and report back.
