16v tranny in 190d 2.2?

I want to swap a 16v manual transmission into my 1984 4-cyl 190d 2.2. OM601 i believe. Would this work? I ran the vin from this 190d 2.2 5-speed (wdbdb22c2ff053723) and its a 717.410 trans, which is obviously different than the 717.404 in my 16v. Does anyone know if this swap would work? Would the gearing be somewhat matched?

The information I have shows the following gearing:
2.3-16: I. 4,08; II. 2,52; III. 1,77; IV. 1,26; V. 1,0; R. 4,16
2.2 dsl: I. 4,23; II. 2,36; III. 1,49; IV. 1,0; V. 0,84; R. 4,63

I grabbed this data from the internet somewhere long ago; I make no guarantees about the accuracy of it.

Thanks for the data! I dont know much about gear ratios, however those seem relatively close to me. Would you say the same?

Not really. You effectively lose 5th gear. And the rest are closer ratios. So, more shifting and no overdrive. Might not be the most economical selection ou could make. Or the quietest. Jim

It's up to you, but I personally don't think they're close enough unless you never drive on the highway.

The biggest issue is the lack of overdrive 5th gear. As Jim said, this is helpful for noise & fuel economy at highway speeds (I use 5th starting at 50mph).

1st gear is only off by a little bit, but I find that the steeper ratio on 1st really helps to get the car moving from a stop (to avoid getting rear-ended by the impatient SUV driver behind you ) and every little bit of extra acceleration counts when you have a 74hp car.

If the 16v differential is available, you could swap out the differential as well to help deal with the 5th gear problem (my records show that the 2.2 has a 3.42; the 2.3-16 has a 3.07 if it's a 1986 or earlier model) but then you'd worsen your situation regarding 1st gear. It's kind of a tradeoff since the 2.3-16 transmission has a narrower range than the 2.2 transmission.

To further complicate things, I should mention that the 2.2's automatic transmission also has a 1.0 top gear (like the 2.3-16 5spd) - so in this sense your converted car might drive similarly to the 2.2 automatic at highway speeds. I can't imagine this being a pleasant experience though.

Even though the transmission you have isn't ideal, if it cost you nothing and you've got the time and your 190D has an automatic now (yuck!), it's probably still worth looking into the swap a little more (for me, a slightly mismatched manual would still be better than an automatic).

cornblatt, i have sold both my 16v transmissions and have now obtained a 5-speed trans from a 2.6 5-speed 190e. 717.432 I have an auto 2.6 diff to go with it too. Let me know what your info says for this trans! Now i have to decide if i want to convert my 2.2d or my 2.6 gasser sportline to 5-speed! Or i could hold out for an OM603 from an SDL and have the ultimate setup!

The info I have says the following:

190E-2.6: I. 3.86; II. 2.18; III. 1.38; IV. 1.0; V. 0.80; R. 4.22
190D-2.2:
I. 4.23; II. 2.36; III. 1.49; IV. 1.0; V. 0.84; R. 4.63

The 190E-2.6 automatic had a 3.07 differential.
The 190E-2.6 manual had a 3.27 up to 09/89 and a 3.92 thereafter.

The 190D-2.2 had a 3.42.
