using Jet A in a Mercedes Diesel

Hello all,

I have heard that the major reason not to run Jet A in a diesel, is the lack of lubrication additives for the injector pump and reciprocating engine. Does anyone know what can be added to make it an acceptable fuel, if so what mix ratio and where do I get it. I have access to about a 1000 gallons at no cost.
Thanks Matt

I have a friend who is a pilot, and uses Jet A in his mb. I will ask to see if there are any issues. Since it's free I don't think he cares

Yeah really, with the savings on that you could get a new engine every 2-3 years....so I doubt it would be a huge concern. If it is, you can always dump in a bottle of Power Service or Redline Catalyst to give it lubricity.

Also, WHERE can I get some free Jet A?!?

I did get 14.8 gallons of diesel free today from my credit card/speedway rewards program though. $53 worth...free! Its always nice to have the needle go from 1/4 tank to incredibly full and know it didn't cost anything.

Bio

I would think a bit of biodiesel would do the trick, anyone tried that?

Ive long since moved to the dark side (flying them instead of fixing them). Years ago a certain amount of fuel was drained from all jets tanks to check for contaminants, rarely was any found, but this fuel was drummed and disposed of. Back in the early 80's we had a piot who bought a diesel rabbit, every few days we'd sneak out to the parking lot and put a few gallons of jet a in. He believed for months that he was getting 75 miles to the gallon, and was not bashful about telling anyone. When we stopped he took the car to the dealer and *****ed up a storm at their service department. I still chuckle over it.

I run Jet A1 in my 350D. I add a quart of Marvel Mystery oil per 25 gallons and 3/4 oz per gallon of Power Services Diesel Supplement. A couple things you need to check for: make sure the fuel is clear, cloudy means lots of suspended water, and there isn't anything growing in it. You may also want to see if you can find out what additives are in the fuel. We use Biobor in ours, so algae growth is not a concern.I filter mine through a paint strainer into my storage drums and then filter it before it goes in the tank. If your engine runs hotter than normal, add more oil. I've had friends using turbine in their vehicles for many years, one has overe 400K on his Chevy and as long as you make sure the fuel is clean and mixed as above you won't run into any probelms. At least we haven't.

I would think a good slug of B99 biodiesel, or even some virgin vegetable oil mixed in would cure any lubricity problems. Of course, I've never tried it with jet fuel, so my opinion is worth the $0 it cost you.

Cheers, John

Are the airlines paying $4.50 a gallon??? If they are...WHOA.

A trans-Atlantic flight can consume over 3,500 gallons of fuel on a large jet/fully loaded. Its just crazy to think about, at every moment, there are hundreds and hundreds (thousands probably) of jets flying around, all burning ginormous amounts of fuel.....its...just not sustainable forever. Someday we're going to have a bunch of jets sitting around.....

Short-haul flights are one of the most inefficient ways of travel.....its crazy.

3500 * 4.50 = $15,750!!! Now THAT is a costly fill-up!
