Alternator Question

Hi,

Had a (hopefully) quick question... I just replaced the alternator with a Bosch 65a today...took it to Autozone to have them test it after I had taken the battery to have it charged there and reinstalled it...alternator was charging at 13.9v but the amps looked low to the guy doing the testing...37.5 at idle

I had nothing else on, other than the clock on the radio and the heaters from my fattywagon kit (total of 16a draw from both).

I don't know what he was thinking, because when I asked him what numbers he was looking for.. he said.." oh, 160 or 170..."?!?!?!?! Anyway, that would be fine I guess if you had three alternators...

My question is what should the amps be reading at idle with or without the 16amp draw from the heaters? Is the alternator doing it's job? Or is it back to NAPA tomorrow with the bad one?

if his testing machine was forcing a power output from the alternator, then it would be whatever his machine was drawing, but I hope he did not force a 60 amp alternator to put out 170amps, cause then you need another alternator.
if he was just measuring the draw from your system, then it depends on the condition of your battery, and the amount of items pulling a load.
35 amps sounds ok, if your battery is moderately discharged.

37.5 at idle sounds pretty good for a 65A alternator....the output goes up with the speed. At 2000 rpm it can probably churn out nearly 70A

Edit: I see you were talking about current use of the car. 37 seems a bit high at idle with nothing much on...though those heaters could draw quite a bit...still seems a little high.
