Just got another one
Just picked up an '86SDL with a busted tranny. Just over 300k on the clock. Starts and runs very well, body in great shape (no rust!), paint a little faded, interior pretty nice as well.
Paid $350. Wondering what to do with it. Should I get a used transmission or a Sun Valley rebuilt and put it back on the road, or part it out? I know there's nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes, but she's just so sweet sitting there. Kinda tears me up to pull her apart. Still with the seller -- pics to follow.

I'd put it back on the road! SDL's are not easy to come by!

Looks like she's gonna need afair amount of work to become a reliable driver, though. Most of it's probably simple stuff. I'll know more once I get her home and start diving in!

I wish I had a place (and a job) that would afford me to purchase multiple old Benz's.
When I get my degree, I'm going to.

Congratulations on your new ride. Fix it Man!
Rebuilt tranny is only around $1100 if you put it in yourself. Not that hard. Then you will have a good car.

How "busted" is it? I suspect that there an astonishing numer of "busted" MB transmissions have been replaced for no good reason by mechanics who didn't take the time to understand them. Of course, if yours has 300K on it, it probably doesn't have a lot of friction material life left.
