Om602 2.5 -> 2.7l

From what I've read, the Sprinter van uses a bored out 602.

How possible is it to find parts, and do a swap? Anyone ever hear of this before?

You heard wrong. Its a completely different engine.

There is a 2.9L direct injection version (OM602DLA29) used in the Phase 1 Sprinter, E290 and Ssangyong Musso and Korando but was never sold in the USA. It is not possible to convert an IDI engine to DI, you would have to import one and swap engines.

Wow that'd be some mega torque to have a direct injection 602....

You'd think huh? It has nearly identical specs to the IDI 602. The only real advantage is the 15% boost in thermal efficiency.

DIna 95hp 113lbs/ft
IDIna 94hp 116lbs/ft

DIt 120hp 206lbs/ft
IDIt 125hp 208lbs/ft

Huh...thats interesting. So slightly better fuel economy and thats it. Hm. And the turbo model is even a bit less powerful....weird. Maybe its *capable* of more power? Can it be tuned (chipped? or is it mechanical?) for more power?

Yes, it has an electronically controlled VE rotary injection pump (AFAIK, the only engine MB used a rotary pump on). It was used in the E290 and there are chips (Upsolute is one) to get it from 120->150hp and 206->265lbs/ft.

Still, much less than a stock OM606a and not much better than a stock OM603a.

Thats still quite a boost though, for something as easy as swapping out a chip. And, the engine would fit in the car a lot easier than a 603 or 606. Always a nice feature.
