Thumbs up Held my own against a teen in a Cobalt SS today!!!

Today on my way to pick up a tranny, I was at a traffic light and looked over to find a teenage guy and his girlfriend in a shiny red brand new "Chevy Cobalt SS edition" complete with spoiler and all the "hot rod" stuff on it. So he eggs me on to race. So I did. And I BEAT him. I punched it as soon as it went green, and it was neck and neck till about 35ish mph, then he let off to shift, and must have screwed up or something, because he fell back, and then we went into a pretty sharp curve and he chickened out and slowed down, while I glided on through with no issues.

Take that, stupid kid in a chevy.

Later on he ended up behind me so he got to smell my smoke and read the badge of what beat him. "Turbo Diesel".

With my maxed out alda, straight pipe, and bosio nozzles, I can get some pretty serious off the line acceleration....especially if I power brake it for a moment first.

I can usually beat my kids' electric scooters if I really punch it.

I read up on this Cobalt SS, and it appears if he had really pushed it he'd have easily beaten me, it has a 0-60 of 6.4 seconds. I bet he was too wimpy to do it, or not good enough with the stick shift or something.

This is exactly what it looked like:

Oh well, so his car was capable of beating me, but he still didn't.....

You have got to keep the kids in their place.

Usualy they don't how to shift, thats how my buddy and I took an M3 a awhile back. Idiot missed 2nd.

4cy FWD cars are dogs, your car could take my Jetta any day of the week. It claims 115hp, but feels like 80.

Yeah, he really fell back and lurched when he tried to shift. I figured he didn't know what he was doing. So he lost.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an "Alda?" I see it here a lot on the diesel section, but don't know what it is. Apparently, it has an effect on take off?

That's funny.. I'll bet his adrenaline was going so hard, especially being with his g/f, he got skeered.... Same thing happens early in the morning, when you turn around to see a big buck standing there staring at you, and you can't reach the gun..

In real world MB's are usualy do very well at stop light races. They are geared pretty well, and not much skill is needed, just floor it and the car will do its thing.

Just because something is faster on paper doesn't mean much in real life. Those 0-60 times for that Cobalt were gotten by experianced drivers who now how to launch and how to shift. They probably run it up to 3k drop the clutch and go, then bang every shift perfect.

They look much nicer with the wing shaved. That Cobalt is hands down faster then an SD. The driver simply didn't push it at all. With a couple hundred $ stage 2, the SS is double the hp of a 617.

I took a twin-turbo Audi with the 16V. My 16V was only 160hp. The difference is, I know how to drive it. The guy in the Audi was sure I had either a V-12, or a kompressor.

Yes, I beat a kid on foot once in my 79 300cd non-turbo. With it's 15 minute 0-60, and its 20 minute quarter mile times thats a big enough challenge the car. Still a great car to drive though. The rust just adds character I think. lol....

I just don't think it would have a chance against a stock Cavalier coupe with alluminum wheels, a new name, and SS badges glued onto the doors and trunk lid.

This is me being a total kill joy - you do know that there is a Cobalt SS and a Cobalt SS Supercharged, right?

Either one would be leaps and bounds faster than a Diesel Benzo, but the SS Supercharged would be the more gratifying kill.

Still, congrats on the race win...haha. Even if it was a questionable race...you still won.

I recall that I beat a friend of mine in a 190hp 5-speed Prelude VTEC awhile back when I had a Civic Coupe EX with 127hp and a 4-speed automatic. He was shifting terribly, and at 4,000 RPM.

I had my ego boost for a few weeks until I gave him a rematch, and he mopped the floor with me. Ha. All in good fun.

What is the point of putting a rear wing on a FWD car that already has a huge amount of power under-streer, is it just cosmetic?
