Acceleration Problems

Hi Guys,
A quick question. I have a 1981 300SD. I have noticed that when I get below a quarter tank of fuel that I will occasionally have slow acceleration, especially when I am on a hill. Otherwise the car drives fine. Fuel filters were changed about 3k miles ago and the prefilter has only a few black specks in it. I have also noticed that the fuel gauge has a tendency to occasionally "stick" and bounce around when it gets to a quarter of a tank.

Is this likely a dirty fuel screen in the tank or is there something else I should be looking for. The car only has 78,000 miles on it, but did sit with minimal yearly miles until I bought it about 3 months ago. I have checked the throttle linkages and they all appear fine. I stress that this is only occasional and only with less than a quarter tank of fuel. As always, all ideas appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like you have a light case of fungus. Sitting around that long gives time for water to condense into the fuel and little spores to grow.

I'd plan to let it run low again, drain the tank, clean the strainer, clean the level sender, toss out the old fuel, fill with fresh clean fuel and add a good dose of biocide.
