throttle wide open code???

We did a diagnostic check on my 96 E300D today, and the code came back with a throttle error. The car has a slight hesitation and the check engine light is on. When I bought the car, we checked it and the reader stated "throttle wide open", which wasnt possible since it was sitting idle. Anyway, the part the mechanic pointed to was towards the firewall, on the drivers side with the throttle linkage going to it. Anyone had any experience with this or know what this part is?

The part he was referring to is part #104 "Sender". I call it a Throttle Position Sensor.

They don't go bad too often. What was the actual code number you got?

Mine usually says this too, and isn't having any difficulty.

I will have to ask him what the code # was. I dont know what it was. I do know the part he was messing with. If I can get a pic uploaded I will post it.

Although that part is apparently just a potentiometer, it is very expensive -- between $400 and $500! I've often wondered whether one could just take it apart and clean the contacts or whatever.

Mine does not (yet) throw any codes but does occasionally hesitate at low (parking lot) speeds. When one presses harder on the foot feed the sender finally figures it out and the car lurches ahead, a somewhat disconcerting reaction. One learns to keep a foot close to the brake when it does that.
