What's Missing on My Engine? (617.950)
Greetings - I think the PO removed some emissions-related items on this engine. I'm comparing the pics in the service manual with engine and some things seem to be missing.
1. Pic1 shows the top of the valve cover and the following items seem to be missing: Guide Lever, both Switchover Valves (64a and 64b), and associated vacuum tubing. 2. Pic2 shows where the EGR is supposed to be, but it's not there? If they are missing, what are the effects of these missing items on the engine. It seems to be running well though without them. Thanks all, - bigmaq

Count your blessings
Are you sure that your model-year car is supposed to have EGR stuff? (I don't know very much about the 1980 models.) Could an older engine have been swapped in by a PO?
In any case, your engine is better off without the EGR crap. Most of us spend a lot of time taking off stuff that you don't have in the first place. Count your blessings, Tiny Tim! Jeremy

Yep, no worries there, you don't have the terrible EGR valve. I have mine disabled anyways....

The different combination of linkages and the like on these engines over the years is just staggering. And 1980 in particular had all kinds of different combinations on SD's, D's, TD's and 240's.

Is EGR supposed to be here?
Good question, and I think you're right about the EGR. The service manual says, "In USA, beginning with model year 1980 for California and starting with model year 1981 for Federal and California, engine 617.950 is provided with an EGR." I'm still confused about what's supposed to be on top of the valve cover though. What is supposed to be there? Thanks, - bigmaq

Ok, so if I'm interpreting this correctly:
1. No EGR for 1980 W116 617.950 (except California models), therefore, 2. No switchover valves, no guide lever, and no vacuum tubing related to the emissions control. Thanks, - bigmaq

Looks right to me. I have a 1980 Cali car, and the valve cover looks like that. I used to have an EGR, but it fell off.

Looks like your car has the transmission without all the vacuum shift controls. Linkage setup looks very much like the one on a 1977 300D with a lever running from the linkage back to the transmission. Probably better off without all the vacuum control junk. Like has been said, there are many variations of linkages, and even the parts manual is hard to decipher, as I found out when I tried to find a part for a 1981 240D but the manual did not show that particular setup.

This is interesting about the year the EGR was introduced.
I have seen 78 SD`s w/o the EGR and 79 SD`s with the EGR here in the Ca. Pick N Pulls. Charlie

If your engine was supposed to have all the valve cover gizmos and the EGR you would see threaded holes on top of your valve cover between the linkages and the oil cap where the related 3/2 way valves and such would the mounted. There aren't any threaded holes that I see. So I agree with the previous post that your car never had all that stuff. Most of it is a huge source of vac leaks anyway, and tends to get blocked off.
Here is my 82 300TD engine. Your valve cover setup is quite different. The linkages aren't the same.

You are right. That is the linkage setup I use on my engine because it does not have all the junk for the valves or automatic tranny bowden cable.
