My 240 is an auto, but I almost never drive it anyway (wife's car). I really do like manuals, there was a time when that was all I would own. If I happened to own a factory 240D manual, I would enjoy it; but I wouldn't bother converting one.

Have you done the trans change yet?

I would jump straight in and manual it.

NO , it is not a "hack" job.

It is a "bolt in using all mercedes parts easy job".

Having a hoist and a donor car helps too

There is no comparison between driving a 240 stick and automatic. At the age these cars are one with a bad automaitc would be converted by me to a stick in a heartbeat!

I bet Craig has not driven a stick to compare to the automatic. There is really a lot of difference in driving.

With an automatic it is tedious, with a stick, engaging.

You've never really driven a 616 until you've driven a 5 spd in a 21ft motorhome. Talk about sporty.

I'd stick with the auto, given the circumstances.

The tranny I offered above is an automatic. Replacing with the same thing is the easiest to do.

But, If I had the stick tranny kit sitting there I would definately put that in.

Gotta tell the truth.

Well, you guys didn't make my decision any easier! I really value everyone's opinion, what to do…what to do? So, I think I found a 1980 300sd with a good auto tranny. Can anyone tell me if this tranny will work for my 82 240d project? After much consideration, I think I might just keep the manual for another project.

The sd tranny is definately different. I don't know if it will work or not.

I have owned plenty of manual cars, never a 240D manual. I do understand the appeal of driving a manual. My driver (300D) travels 40K miles per year (almost all highway, and often 800-1000 miles in one day), so an auto is probably the best choice. My wife drives the 240D about 5K per year around town (while drinking her morning coffee) and she is probably not that interested in playing with a stick shift anyway.

Honestly, I like the 240D but I don't really think I would want one (manual or auto) as my driver. They are cool "around town" cars, but they simply do not have enough power (or the correct gearing) for current highway driving conditions (75-85 mph). If I want to play with a shift, I'll ride my motorcycle, or maybe I'll get around to putting my 914 (auto-cross car) back together someday.

They will do 72 to 75 but not 85 highway, comfortably.

Having had both types of 240 I would never buy an automatic unless it had a bad tranny and i was planning to convert it to stick....I don't think.

My wife insists on an automatic too....coffee.

They will do 75, but I don't like it. It really feels like you a beating them to death at the speed/rpm. When I have traveled long distances (over 1000 miles) in the 240D, I've kept the average speed closer to 65-70. That's OK, except you are getting passed by everything from semis to little old ladies in dodge darts.

They don't feel comfortable above 72 to me but I think the engine is fine with it.

A fifth gear would be about perfect.

Probably true, but I buy these things to preserve them not to beat them up. If I want to drive faster than about 70, I just take another car.

You should try driving a manual transmission in traffic while also eating a sandwich AND drinking a cup of coffee-great fun
