I hold my cell phone in my right hand, wave at the girls with my left, and steer with "little" Tommy . . .

Jimmy and little tommy? I prefere a Johnson .

If I have my choices on transmissions, it would always be a stick.
especially on a 240, being naturally experated they need all the help they
can get.

My wife being shiftless, she prefers the automatic.

So, will an automatic transmission from a 1980 300sd work for my 240d? I know one member thought that it didn't.. any other thoughts? Thanks.

It is not at all pointless. It is a fun car to drive in a relaxing soothing type of way. It is hard to verbalize, but it can create a smile while driving.....
A 240D with a stick shift is a great car to drive because you have to drive it balls-to-the-wall to keep up with traffic, yet this kind of driving won't hurt the car at all. Use the speedo shift points, and you're fine.

I would trade my 300D nonturbo for a 240D 4-speed without a second thought.

How about from a 1985 240d? Should be an easy swap, right?
