1991 350 SDL 2000 RPM Burrrrrrrrrrp sound

I have owned this car for approx. 10 years. I have yet to have anyone tell me what the sound is when the engine rpm reaches 2000. It sounds like an exhaust shield vibrating, but I have replaced the mufflers some time ago. Can this be a torque converter sound? It always takes place at 2000 rpm through the shift or if you hold the rpm at 2000. I have removed the EGR for this particular test. The trans. is the one that came in from the factory, I have resealed the pump/seals once. The shift points seem to be fine and the engine/trans combo pulls good. The noise takes place hot or cold. I have removed everything from the spare tire area, to no avail. Any ideas?

I can't hear anything from the engine compartment. The noise "sounds like" it is coming from the left/rear area of the car. You can hear it in the back seat with the car sitting still, foot on the throttle to 2000 rpm, trans in park. It starts at 1800 rpm and ends at 2000 rpm. I have even checked the fuel return line and found nothing out of the ordinary.

what about the bushings at the tranny shift rods, they will get worn and cause strange noises, usually one can feel the slop in the shifter though.
the belt tensioner shock will wear at the bushings and make noise, but it will usually go away when you are up in rpm, look at the belt with a light and if it is moving in and out say 1/2 to 1 inch then most likely you got a bad shock absorber.the device will also get real hot to the touch even if you just start the car and let it run for a couple minutes when its bad.
i suppose if i was looking for the noise i would load the rear(maybe ask my mother in law to get in the trunk)and repeat the test . this could help eliminate some of the suspension components, would have to think that move over, what it i forgot to let her out??

Take a look, or listen with your mech's stethoscope to the flexible connections connecting the exhaust to the turbo. They can cause vibrations at different rpm's that are heard at the back of the car.

How are the motor mounts?

Motor mounts are good. The belt tension shock, spring,& bearing are all in good working order.

1991 350D Burrrr sound

I have a 1991 SD and I had a NOISE at about 45MPH which was very annoying. The teck. checked several things including new exhaust clamps etc. He wanted to replace the exhaust system ( very expensive). I had another teck. (different location) check the noise and he found the problem. It was a $20. fuel line rubber hose about 18 or so inches long. It was a hose that had a bubble or larger place in the hose about 3 or 4 inches long. Maybe this is the problem.

Since we both have diesels, I thought you might have a suggestion to my problem.
I replied suggestion the hose to your problem.
Now for my problem.
I have a 1997D that has a hesitation at times when starting off. It will start off and suddenly die. The engine does not cut off just goes back to idle for a second or two. When you pat the accelerator it will continue to run O.K. If you accelerate rather fast when you start off it will run fine.

I have had fuel lines, O rings replaced-had the manifold steam cleaned and the filter in the fuel tank cleaned.

Do you have any suggestions or know a source that I could possible get a solution.

Thanks

Try this for diagnosing the rattle. This is with the car standing still, but running.

Take a long steel or wood rod or dowel, an old broom handle etc., that will reach the areas you wish to check. Touch the area with one end of the rod and hang on to the other with your hand, and move it from area to area, to check where the buzz or vibration, eminates. It's worked for me many times and I usually find the problem.

Sounds like the muffler baffles inside the muffler are loose, a fuel pump, either inside or outside the tank has developed a buzz or rattle. The parking brake cable(s) are loose or a bracket, is loose or broken. A few ideas.
