[quote=networkboy;1708532]The good news:

Also, my 2 cents: I think the interval between waypoints should tick off at 333 miles rather than 250 to give an edge to the diesels over the gassers

Cheers,

The third day is a short one (spend the afternoon at great dunes national park), one of the legs will be long distance, another one is an uphill climb. I will divide the map into legs for everyone and post it.

I plan on putting diesels and gassers, and 1996 or newer vehicles in seperate categories. Attendance permitting, $1000 to the best over all time and MAYBEY $250 the the best in each category, trophies, etc. I need to have at least 20-25 cars in the rally to break even with $100 entry fee though.

The Austin Craig's list has quite a few cars to choose from. Another option is to rent a U-Haul truck and trailer and drive their truck to San Antonio. Its probably cheaper than shipping it.

Good gas mileage vehicles will kill in the first 2 legs. Gassers will have advantage in mountain climb. From the time the 1st person arrives at checkpoint we will take a 2hr break, hopefully nobody will get too far behind, and we will all start together. Driver's can work on their cars at the stop, but CANNOT GO GET GAS!

Car show in Glenwood springs from 4-6 upon arrival. I hope to get MBUSA involved with this. Award ceremony 6:00 pm

I have a family member in Austin who could look at the car and pay for it. (Sounds like fun actually.) We can fly out a week ahead and see what I can pull off and when it's all over I get another diesel to play with

Since this would be a total "impulse" deal I'm thinking $4K on the car. Thoughts?

I know something that works! You spend $500 to fly (roundtrip ticket) to Memphis, TN. You purchase my 1985 300D ($3500 OBO) and we drive (I'm taking my 300SDL) together to the starting point. If you want to come a day or 2 early, we can go over both cars with a fine tooth comb. I have an ad in the classified section and lots more pics.

Pick me up in Roswell. For now, I'm living here. '83 300d td sedan with roughly 600k miles I bought last march from a friend. If she's still running and I'm still here, I'm in.

Living in Roswell for now? Can you disclose what you're doing there, or would you have to kill me?

Researching the alien half of my immaculate conception which produced a being strange enough to have owned a '66 Corvair for 27 years followed by a MB 300D TD sedan.

IF - and it's a big if - I'm still here I think it'd be fun to join the rally "unofficially." Don't think I'd want to put the miles to drive to Texas and backtrack but I frequently go to Santa Fe and various parts of Colorado anyway as I have significant connections to those places.

Oh, Tyler, FYI, the Corvair was purchased in 1978 from MY paternal grandmother immediately after high school graduation. 4-door hardtop 95 hp, 2-speed automatic - powerglide transmission with 14k original miles on it at that time (12 yrs old). Serviced every three months by the same mechanic. She bought it to run into town with for groceries - figured she could throw them in the back seat.

Beater Benz purchased March '07 from a friend in Santa Fe after I returned from running away from home for 18 months (SE Asia). Came home broke, homeless, and carless and bought the Benz for 300 bucks more in 2007 than I bought the freakin' Corvair from my own grandmother for in 1978. 500 bucks for the Corvair, 800 bucks for the Benz.

This sounds like a pretty awesome idea. I think I've found something to finally spend my 250+ hours of saved vacation time on. I'm contemplating on driving the 84 euro TD, simply for the ease of working on it if the need arises and for the extra space, plus I went though it thoroughly this past summer and fixed just about everything that needed doing. Would like to have it painted before then but that might be pushing it.

Where would we be staying at the the overnight places? Also what happens if someone breaks down and it can't be fixed easily? are there any provisions for that or would they be on their own?

powerpig and I would caravan down to san antonio from the dc area, who else is going from up here?
