It was the US marketing arm that renamed cars like the Audi 4000/5000 and Mercedes 300D 2.5, 190E 2.6, 190D 2.5, et al.

We get to thank them for things like not getting a fuel-efficient diesel Toureg also, ... lots of things we don't get here.

Subsequently when they offered larger engines in them to make up for sluggish performance they designated that with the engine displacement on the right hand side of the trunklid. Thus 190E 2.3, 2.6 etc. Same as the 300SEL 6.3, 280SEL 4.5 and 450SEL 6.9 of times past. And if I remember correctly I think they even had a 1.8 liter gas engine in them later in their model run in Europe.

The 123 200d had a 616 motor, at least the only one I have ever seen did.

Was that a 615, or a 616?

I'm pretty sure it was a 615.

I meant the 190E gas car not the diesel. I believe it was the same 2 liter as in the 200 gasser 123 which was not a car that ever made it to the US but which was popular in europe and other parts of the world. Like South Africa where I had one as my third Benz. I think that was the same engine that they used in the first 190E and they simply fuel injected it for the purpose.

I have a W201 2.5 turbo and it is no lame car. It has 293,000 kms and is my daily driver. I think we don't hear from a lot of folks on this board is because it is way outnumbered by 124 and 126 owners.

The turbo version was only imported into North America in 1987, and there were very few with manual transmissions.

My cousin in NZ has a gasser and it has a 1.8L engine, so I have to assume that somehow the 190 series started because of a smaller displacement engine outside the NA market.

1987 seems to be the good year for fast diesels. Only in 87 did we get the 124 300D with the 603 and the 201 190D 2.5T with the turbo 602. I wonder what made MB discontinue those models after 87? Was it an emissions thing?

If I had the cash to get my hands on a 190D 2.5T I'd definitely do it. A smaller car with good power for around town driving would be great, especially since it would offer a bit better fuel economy over my 124 300D with the same engine. Of course that car would also have to get in line on my want list with a 500E and a 129 SL...

Probably. Kind of the same way the VW V10 TDI Touareg was 50-state legal for a few weeks.

I just bought an '87 190D turbo along with another one as a parts car. The parts car is toast but the running car isn't bad with exception that the trans skips 2nd gear. Not an issue - picked up a 5 speed trans, pedals, shift linkage, etc., yesterday. I think it's going to be a lot of fun when we get it sorted out! By the way, should have some parts left over from the parts car (also 87 190D turbo). let me know if anyone needs anything and I'll see if we have it. Cheers, all.
