Exclamation Oil Questions... I have a Brilliant Idea

There are frequent "how much oil do I use", "what brand oil do I use", "What oil interval do I run" threads started. With no offense to those thread starters, I have an idea that might help to simplify life around here.

I suggest that we create a new thread. Call it the "Oil Information Thread".

Everybody that wants to is allowed to make one post in there. It is not a place for debate or anything else. Everybody will post their model, their oil type and brand, their oil filter brand, etc. Then, we make that thread a sticky where anybody who wonders can read through all our opinions on the matter and THEN come back with specific questions.

No debate, fighting, arguing, friendly banter, discussion, or anything else should be allowed in that thread. It should almost resemble a database of everybody's change preferences. Each post should read something like:

"My car is a 1986 300sdl. I use rotella-t dino 15w40 oil and I change mine every 5,000 miles by draining it at the plug."

As simple as that. Just an "opinion collection" thread that people could refer to.

Anybody interested? Particularly Brian or the Webmaster(s)?

Probably wouldn't work well unless it is made a sticky, and 7 is already too many stickies as-is.

I think it is a good idea! But more importantly, since you disagree please don't complain anymore when these type of threads show up now & then.

If I don't complain about the threads showing up occasionally, can I complain about trolls within?

The question that must be asked is what value does a thread with 200 posts bring to the forum.........each with a different brand of oil.

You might as well just go to the local McParts and pick one.

In reality, any diesel rated oil will do fine for the purpose intended, provided that it's changed after a realistic interval depending on driving conditions.

I don't think a sticky would be valuable for such a purpose.

I do believe that such a thread already exists on DD. Good luck in finding it, however.

Thanks, Brian - it was just a thought. Seems like every other thread ends in a fight over oil or something else now, just an idea that came through.

Oil threads always result in fights. The simple answer is that nobody has any facts. People without facts must shout ever louder in a valiant attempt to make their case.

Here's an excellent idea from Craig:

You wish to change your oil every 3K miles..........fine.........please do so.

You wish to never change your oil..........fine........please do so.

It's your engine..........do what you wish.

Good thoughts, Brian.....

Those attempting to use their "opinion" on oil-change/frequency OR brand as "gospel," soon learn their folly.

Thanks!

Everyone's opinion is folly. Except yours. Got it.

I'm not so sure it's oil causing the wars, but it sure does supply money for them. I don't know about you, but I use a whole hell of a lot more diesel fuel than motor oil.

So you better both stop changing your oil and stop buying diesel fuel. Problem solved.

Actually, this is the only part I agree to. An Oil info thread to me would contain much needed info on things like quantities, specs etc. Not so much opinions, but maybe the info that's in the manuals. You gotta remember, most of us are coming in cold to the MB world, much less the diesel world, so our knowledge is quite limited

I for one, was searching for a thread to find out how much oil to put in my 1984 300D and was quite surprised to read the great many differences

Eventually I stumbled upon one written by D Morrison (I believe) who said it was 6.5 litres as read from the Service Manual. And right after that, Palangi chimed in to say there were two different diptsticks

In the end, I put in more oil than I should (I think) and the reading is slightly over the 2nd notch. But I guess more is better than less.

Still, I think you can see where this is coming from. In the end, I think a central repository for oft-answered questions would be great. And yep, oil info is probably up there for the rank newbie like me

Joe, the folks who change their oil every 3K usually don't insist on it as "gospel".

Most of the members realize that there is no magic number for oil changes. They've settled on a number and it works for them.

Certain other people vehemently oppose a 3K oil change and wish to go longer. This also works for them in the short term...........and maybe the long term as well.

However, attempting to change the opinion of others without any facts to support your position is "gospel" of the first order.

You're perfectly free to never change your oil. I'd appreciate it if you'd allow others the same latitude to change their oil as they see fit.

Believe it or not, it's possible to respectfully disagree with other members of the board.
