OK, so the paper test would distinguish between BIO and off-road.

I think that off-road and homebrew B-100 is very similar in color. Both Red. However B-100 may be a little more transparent.

And how can homebrew B100 be completely legal, if you are not paying the road taxes?

In WV, I was filling my SD at the legal pump when a Sherriff's deputy calls me over. He says "why are you using that pump?" I said "I am putting road fuel into my car." He said " The cheap pump is over there, why not use it? Nobody ever tests anything but 18wheelers around here"

I thanked him and went back to filling from the road pump. althought I am tempted to fill up my 5 gallon jugs with the off orad stuff and siphoning it into the car. I can always say, It was an emergency and I needed to get some fuel into her fast.

I also like the tranny fluid idea!

It distinguishes between fuel with the red dye (heating oil/non highway) and fuel without, bio or road legal diesel fuel.

RED fuel is NOT biodiesel. You COULD have seen a mix of some sort. All the bio I made has been straw/yellow never red. I don't know where you live or drive so check your local laws but where I am personal use home bio in a non weight rated, non commercial vehicle is legal.

Glad you didn't follow his advice. I bet he would've had an inpromptu fuel tank check right then and there.

Was it up in the panhandle on I-81 near the MD state line?

Yep, the Hess station off Exit 13 on I-81.

Just have to look at the clear prefilter to see the red dye it is pretty obvious (bright red!)

I guess it probably depends on what you use for stock to make the Bio.
Here are a couple of pics of successful bio. Thanks to biodieselcommunity.org

Red and Yellow both attached. I have also seen a much more transparent yellow, almost clear.

Most of the batches I have made have turned out reddish. Especially when looking at it in the clear in-line filter on my MB.

So, I'm curious if anyone knows whether or not homebrew B-100 is legal in Colorado for private use. And, if so, why does the B-100 at the pump include road taxes?

After all of the discussion about the legality of home brewed bio, I checked the rules in KY. Sorry to say that to make my own fuel legally that I must post a $5K bond and file monthly reports. I'm finding it difficult to want to comply with that edict.

A note i remember from reading a fuel chart back in the day. Off road diesel generally has a lower cetane number in it so you may run into some performance issues while burning it.

I wish that was the case. But that was not how the reply read. Unless I totally misread the reply, ANYONE who makes fuel is considered a distributor and must comply.
