'83 240D w/Manual Tranny

For some time now I have been looking for a good condition 240D with four speed to use as a commuter (100 miles per day). We owned a '76 model in CA and drove it for years. I have found an '83 for sale locally in what appears to be excellent shape. Body and interior are near perfect and it runs out real well. Everything works including A/C. It does, however, hammer quite a bit at start up and then quiets down. Should this be a concern? Possibly an injector or glow plug issue? Car has very little smoke and good power. Mileage is 262K. Any help would be appreciated.

At 262k it likely still has the original injectors/nozzles, replacing those and rebuilding the injectors would probably alieviate the problem.

If its only hammering for a couple minutes when first started then its probably due to worn out glow plugs. Replacing the glow system on these cars with the Bosch after-glow relay and plugs goes a long way to fast, smooth starts.

A diesel purge may help with those injectors also

The motor mounts could need replacing, particularly the driver side one as a leaking fuel line can destroy it.
