The case doesnt match the back cover. The 5 speed items were probably gutted out of this tranny and transplanted to a 4 speed. I heard its possible. Whats the other item aside from the bell and tranny?

Top half that meets with the bell. I am totally going to buy this if the price stays low, hint hint. The only real issue is that I do not have a 5 speed manual. The manual manual only covers 4spds. In fact I seriously doubt I will ever find an english 5 spd manual.

Nothing does not include "basically the same with..." . I'll take a pic soon and we can all compare. Perhaps my vision or memory are faulty ( I did just come from a party next door ) - or it's nothing like my w123-617 four speed.
EDIT-
It looks a bit different- but mine has the bellhousing and part of the driveshaft attached.

The late 123 four speeds are indeed different. They have an integral bell housing and the case is all ribbed aluminum.

This fiver is an iron case four speed with the aluminum five speed housing attached to the back (as they all did).

The haynes manual for a 280 has some information on these five speeds.

Actually I just looked and it just has one more drawing of the five speed than the haynes 123 diesel book.

I've seen the 123 5 speed model tranny and it looks very similar to the 4 speed. There is no separate housing attached to the rear for the extra gears. There's no separate bell housing. It's all one casting, just a slight difference at the end. They both measured approximately the same length.

I have a five speed in my 240D

I just bought this 1985 euro model so I can't tell you too much about it other than the car has 247K miles on it and the previous owner said he had no problem with it. It shifts fine to me. I've driven it about 1000 miles (mostly highway), and it works great....so far.

SO...I suppose you'll have to just do some manual labor, to manually acquire the required manual..., manually.

Or you could just manually take it all apart, and then manually rebuild the manual....Manually.

Which ever parts don't go back as they should, or wherever there are blanks, or bad parts, You'll know which ones are no good, Kinda like a Jigsaw puzzle, with more manual labor involved..

Without a manual however, the manual labor will be thrice as grueling because or your lack of having acquired the required manual.

So, all of this manual labor.... Is it really worth all of this manual research, and manual labor for a manual transmission..? I know a guy name Emanual, he's an expert on these manual trannys. He doesn't even own Emanual..err, I mean a manual. Ok this is enough manual labor for me tonight...What's that burning smell...? DOH!! Never mind, I just thought of something again, that's all that was...

That would be the later model. I have not known that one to be offered in a 123 body but I wouldn't be surprised if it appeared in very late euro models. That is the configuration of the fivers offered in the 190s and 124s.

It does not show up in any of my 123 repair manuals.

But like I have said here recently a number of times....it is not a good idea to say never!

I have always wanted a 5 speed. I figure a cheap buy and get some replacement parts is the way to go. If they are available. Otherwise its a good backup 4 speed right!

I think it would require some parts to make into a four speed. The tail shaft housing is different and possibly the main shaft inside the gearbox. (I am not sure of the correct name for these parts).

It didnt say anything about reverse working or not. I wonder if parts are still available for this tranny?

Not much help I'm afraid, but I do remember the 5 spd I took out of a euro 82 240D and stuck in my 79 didn't look like that, looked very much like a late 4 spd.

When I sold my previous 300D over a year ago, I had a chance a few months later to buy one of the later 5 speed trannies for around $750. The guy had a few 4 speed manual trannies as well. I passed on the 5 speed because I didn't think I'd buy another diesel.
I would certainly buy one now.
