If I didnt know better
I would say the high cost of diesel is the oil companies trying to prevent ppl from moving over from gas.......

I believe it is the high consumption of Diesel by semi-trucks running all over the place and freight ships going back-n-forth to China at 500,000+ gallons per trip.

if commercial companies are willing to pay the price it will continue to rise. They just offload the costs on the consumer. Plus with a small private use diesel fleet they will not change a thing..
Reason why I think two types of diesel.. well three would be needed 1) off road dyed red 2) commercial fuel dyed blue 3) private , road taxed, dyed green complicated as heck or maybe some tax for for non commercial diesel owners |

Aren't freight ships running on heavy bunker fuel, not diesel fuel?

Freighters use Bunker fuel - looks like molasses.
Right now, the price increase is mostly seasonal (besides the increase of crude). All those people living up north, rely on heating oil to heat their homes/businesses. "Production" gets moved from Road fuel, to Heating fuel. It will become cheaper again in the spring (or sooner, if there is a mild winter).

When I was in the Navy on that Destroyer back in the 60`s, we were
using that Bunker oil. the ship had boilers to make steam for the turbins. sure did make a mess during an Unrep if a hose came lose or broke. happened more than once. good reason not to be a deck ape. It was my understanding that these newer ships used Diesel. some of the newer Navy ships are some type of gas turbin, maybe Diesel? Most of the high cost is just plain old greed. one station is $3.84, and one down the street is $3.49. Today I used Bio Diesel for the first time in the MB. they use to be B99. now they are B5. guy said the pumps had to be Rated, certified or something like that to pump anything higher than B5. the great state of calif and all their BS. has everything screwed up. the guy said they might be able to sell B20. that is the highest Calif will let them go. they were not able to sell any Bio Diesel for about 2 months because of the Calif BS Politics. The stuff is so...."crude", that it has to be preheated first.

After general transportation, and home heating fuel needs, the third primary reason for the increase in the price of diesel is the recent introduction of ULSD on a nation wide basis. This is a fuel that contains about 15 ppm of sulfur vs several hundred ppm for the previous Low SD. The process equipment and infrastructure upgrades have cost all of the refiners a bundle, with no other way to recoup costs than a price increase. But now the exhaust coming out of the trucks is cleaner than the air going into the engines. YEAH RIGHT !!!

As long as big oil is in the white house, the price will trend upward. And as long as we're used to it, it will continue in that direction, just my opinion.

Prices increase started with Katrina excuse.....
Big Oil (the 900 pound gorilla in the room) needed to re-coup the billions to spend on the Katrina clean-up/refrinery rebuild. Big Oil decided mom and pop America would scream like crazy if they popped for a big increase on gasoline prices....maybe enough to get Congress and the Pres. to do something drastic...like regulating the fuel prices for a while. So Big Oil decided to raise diesel the most, and in that manner to "tax" the public for the rebuild. The prices would go on down to everything on the marketplace and not be noticed as much by John Q. Public as much. Smart cookies those execs for Big Oil. Really made their millions in paycheck and bonuses for the CEO's that year. Well, it seemed such a good idea, that they have continued with this policy....and John Q. doesn't have a clue, even to bend over or ask for foreplay, while he is getting ....screwed.
