'99 E300 TD Electrical Issues

I have read a few posts on various boards about the '99 E300 TD electrical problems. My front windows occasionally work from the console. The power seats work occasionally. Same goes for the sideview mirrors. Any tips on what to go after first? The dealer wants a wad of dough to go "searching" for the problem. I've read things about the voltage regulator as well as some sort of board in the firewall where the computer is stored. Are there harnesses in the front doors that need replacing?

Also, my driver's side fog light seems to work intermittently. Oh, the drivers side window works with the key from the fob.

Thanks,
MC

Hi, welcome to the group! Do the windows move if you push the switch down slightly? And not when you press it firmly? Reason I ask is that my car needed everything synchronized when I bought it. The way it was working made me think everything was broke.

To re-synchronize the windows, press the button enough to get it moving. Keep holding it as long as it takes to fully open or fully close. When the window comes to a stop, sontinue to hold the button for 2-3 additional seconds then release. Should work again after this procedure.

As for the seats, I don't know if they are re-synched the same way or not... Sorry...

Windows/mirrors I'd suggest somebody has spilt liquid in there. Get a can of alcohol and give it a good spray. Easy to remove the wood trim, just open the oddment tray behind, put your fingers under the board near the mirror joystick, and pull sharply up.

I don't have power seats so couldn't comment.

Foglight will be corrosion, small flaps under the bumper to access them. Rear foglight, same thing, will just need cleaning.

Worst case you can buy a replacement window console off of eBay.

Use your climate control diagnostic mode and watch code 24 for your voltage values. When fully charged mine reads between 12.9 - 13.3 volts. If not in that range it could be the: a) battery b) voltage regulator c) entire alternator assembly

99 E300 Loss of Power

Still need to follow up on the front windows, power seats and mirrors. The problem now is loss of power when travelling at highway speeds - particularly when going up hills and when fuel is below half a tank. The transmission shifts hard when dealing with this problem. Also, a strong smell of diesel around the car and what looks to be a small leak of fuel - I see a stain on the driveway from time to time.

I'm thinking it's:
Fuel Filters
Fuel Lines
O-Rings
K40 Relay
Hopefully not the injector pump

The dealer says the transmission, which I had them change the fluid in and re-seal 30 days ago is throwing codes. They think I need a new transmission!

Thoughts? I'd like to be a loyal diesel follower - had a '91 VW Eco Diesel through grad school - loved it even at 50+ horsepower. I'd like to keep driving a german diesel.

I just had the control arm bushings replaced, the ball joints replaced, the motor mounts replaced and the cupholder replaced...yes, the cupholder replaced.

I want to drive it for another 150,000 miles! Help!

First things first. Find the fuel leak and repair it; it is probably responsible for the poor performance when going up hill and when the engine demands more fuel.

Spray the IP, fuel filter housing and fuel lines clean with carb or brake cleaner (my choice) then drive it a day and give a good look and/or feel with fingertips for wetness that night.

Once thats located and fixed we can begin to address the other issues. The trans may or may not be related to your other electrical gremlins.

Did the dealer give you a print out with the trans codes and adaptation values?
