96 E300d here, just some information from the service cd regarding the removal of the coolant pump. I would like to get some input regarding the steps outlined. I am not replacing my coolant pump at this time, but if needed, I would like to be sure footed in making the repair. Thanks

Step 7 in the process reads as follows:
Position piston of Cyl#1 to TDC

Step 8
Unbolt bracket of TDC sensor
*Note*
Removal on engines with TDC Sensor Bracket:
Mark installation of the TDC sensor bracket with a marking tool relative to the timing case cover.

The service cd goes on to talk about the re installation of the TDC sensor bracket using the marks that were made on the timing case prior to removal. My question is: How critical is it regarding getting the TDC sensor bracket back to its original location?

Pimpernell,

I am going to be doing mine New Year Eve and New Years day. If you can hold off until then I will let you know what I find out.I saw that on ALL DATA as well, funny thing, if you jump to the other part about removing the entire pump housing, it doesnt mention anything about setting to TDC. IF we have to remove the TDC bracket, then it would be very critical to set it back to TDC.. I just went to the dealer yesterday to get the parts, the total parts were 626.09, this included waterpump, both upper and lower hose, thermostat and all parts for tensioner, pulley, shock, spring, as well as the pivots and bolts. I still dont know where my indy was coming up with the remaining 900.00. Dealer claims 3 hours for water pump.

I am curious why you didn't mention paying the dealer for 3 hrs of labor as an option for the repair?

I just did two water pumps... one on a 260e...another on a 300e.

I wouldn't bother replacing the shock or the pulley. What I would buy is a fan clutch, water pump, thermostat, and belt tensioner. Buy the belt tensioner.

It took me 6 hours to do this the first time, 5 hours the second time.

I think 1600 is way too much... I would say price of parts (Phil price) plus 500 dollars.

Wish you were closer...I would lend a hand.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am on the fence about just having the dealer do it. It all sounded good on paper, but time is against me, and may just bow down and let the dealer do it. I am going to pick up the parts tomorrow and go from there. I also got a lead on an Independent guy in Balto City that works on MBs, I am going to check with him also.

$100 for the water pump

$3 for the gasket

$30 for a new belt if you need one.

Belt shock should be $40-$50.

Throw in another $40 for two gallons of collant, so about $213 in parts if you need all that. The water pump on these cars probably takes about an hour to change, its right up front and comes off pretty quick. If you need to replace the belt tensioner shock thats right up top and took me about 10 minutes, the belt on a 606 is cake just thread it around, don't even have to take off the fan. Replacing the pully is a waste of money, they don't wear out, same goes for the spring.

I would have laughed at the $1,600 quote and did all the work myself in a couple of hours, for $200+ some beer.

Well I tackled the waterpump replacement this weekend. While I was there I replaced all parts for the tensioner as there was some sideways play on the pivot arm. My only trouble has been trying to remove the clutch from the old water pump. I cannot get that bolt to budge. There isn't a way to secure the pulley without the MB tool, (unless anyone can offer any advice). I am going to stop by the dealer today and beg to see if one of the mechanics will remove the clutch for me. I need to get a couple of parts they were ordereing also.

Have you tried a strap wrench around the pulley? You can buy a set of 3 of them at Lowes for under $20 I think and they come in handy if you don't already own them.

You might also try an impact wrench on the bolt to break it free.

If he had an impact wrench, he wouldn't be posting this. Take it by to a shop foreman at the MB service, and he'll have it off in 3 seconds. I've found them to be very helpful on small favors to help a DIYer. I do it all the time, when changing out alternators. Good luck, sounds like you're on your way!

Well the dealer was kind enough to remove the pulley and fan clutch for me N/C.. Meanwhile I have purchased a set of the BMW Mercedes Fan Clutch tools which should be here on Wed or Thurs. I figured it was worth the 100.00 on the tools for peace of mind and the fact that I will probably be replacing one on another MB sooner or later, and this way I can do it right and take apart in the order it should be taken apart.. I forgot to order a couple of other small parts, so I am on hold until Thursday.

If anyone in the mid-atlantic needs to borrow the tools let me know. I hopefully wont have a use for them for awhile.(probably not until the radiator goes LOL..

On a lucky purchase I got my hands on a dewalt 18V 1/2" drive impact wrench. It is a great tool. If you see one cheap, grab it. Get the XBR batteries if you have a choice.
