Center Cap Sizes - which years which size

I posted this here because Diesel is my home
and seems to have more readers tuned to what we do.

I want to know what size wheel center caps are used on the
1980's 14 inch alloy wheels (bundt).

I measured mine and they are about.... 3 inches.

When I do the mm I still am not confident as to what size they are.

I know it's a stupid question, but so far I have collected and paid for
every wrong size.

These are the ones you are looking for:

I don't have the size in mm or the part number.

They are all the same size. Check ebay.

Nope, the newer cars have smaller center caps that won't fit on the bundts.

Okay so I measure the inner diameter of the center cap that would correspond to the hole
size on my wheel and get 74mm.

The outer lip measures at 85mm .

Now, I see ads for 75mm caps and they state this as diameter ,
so I assume not the inner size, meaning a 75mm must be those smaller
ones for W124 , etc...

I get people talking inches sometimes, like 2 7/8 or 2 15/16 or "about 3".

Well, with a tape measure and an eyeball all three of those are "about" 3.

Hence my desire to put this to rest and get some numbers for different
size wheels, different year cars.

You tried it? I have newer ones on mine (non bundts) but I see no reason they wouldnt fit.

Are yours missing, or do you just want better looking ones?

I can't find a reference, but I do remember digging through a box of used ones at my indy's shop (after I lost one) and finding two distinct types. The older (bundts) were about 1/4" larger and protrude a little. I believe they are just like this (measuring about 3-1/4" to the outer edge):

The newer ones (for the flat type wheels) were smaller and sat below the surface of the wheel, they look like this:

Well, let's see - yep those smaller ones slip right inside the wheel.
I tried it, bought the about-3-inches ones from somebody.

I agree, about 3 1/4 inches for outside diameter.
Maybe 3 3/8 to be more precise.
(for the older 14 inch bundt).

And as for why... just need to replace missing ones where the tabs broke off,
then the cap fell off on the highway.

I do not have concourse level cars, I am just glad the paint matches.
Don't need new caps, not looking to improve, just replace missing ones.

So used caps are fine , I spray paint what I need to.

Anyway, thank you everyone for chiming in.

Now that you know what you need, just hunt around on ebay for a cheap one, or check the local junkyard or used wheel places.
