Lucas
Good Afternoon,
I just finished reading posts about lifter noise (I have something that sounds like that). I have a 1984 190d 2.2 and use Shell Rotella 15W40 + 1/2 quart of Lucas Oil every time I change at 3,000. Anybody else use Lucas? Any problems? Thanks. Hugh Sr. |

i love lucas every engine i own has it The boat engine has 30000 hours on it one gallon of lucas for 7 gallon still shows 40 lbs of oil pressure at idle

Lucas Oil
I have Lucas 75/90 Synthetic Gear Oil in my Diff ... No issues

Lucas has slowed leaks in engines i have had. It has worked wonders in power steering pumps, took all the noise away. I use it in a cummins and is makes the oil last longer. I'd use it, maybe 1-2-qt per change.

Don't use it, use synth. There is a post on here with videos of petro vs synth vs petro with lucas. Basically synthetic is the only option less froth, air in oil == premature engine wear.

I also use Lucas in all my engins. I got started after I did a little experiment with my 500SEL. I usually only start it one or two times per week. I always worried about DRY startups. I let the car sit for 2 weeks and before starting, I removed the oil cap and rubbed my finger on one of the cam lobes. It was basically dry as I suspected. I then added 1 quart of Lucas, drove the car to get it mixed in and then let it sit for 2 weeks. Rubed the cam lobe and it felt oily. That was enough for me. Any thing has oil in it also gets the approiate Lucas treatment. Works for me.

You know, that is strange. I guess no one told my lucas it was supposed to foam up because it doesn't. If it were foaming you would be able to see it on the stick when checking the oil on a fuel stop. I will admit that I tried pure Lucas in my differential and it foamed up. I replaced it with syn 80-90 and the suggested amout of Lucas and the foaming went away. I believe that demonstration was put on by Schaffers, which does make a great oil, by the way.

You wont see it foam up in 'big' car engines. But there are many threads on motorcycle forums where the oil+lucas additive would foam up and push its way out of the dipstck tubes.
Also it wasnt Schaffers' oil that foamed up, it was the penzoil and chevron delo with the lucas additive added.

So what are we saying about Lucas
Ok, the car was designed prior to Lucas being on the market. What are we saying it will do for your car? Make it last another 10,000 miles, 100,000 miles, what?
How long do you have to let your car sit idle before there's no oil on the parts, and how long does it take to get oil flung up to those places, and how much damage will it do with no oil on the parts from a dry start? Two things. First the remark about Schaffers, I was meaning that Schaffers put on the demonstration to show what happens with other oils and other oils with Lucas, and what happens using their oil. You can take any set of data and come to many conclussions.
Second, I don't know if the engine will last longer or not, I only stated what I found when using and not using Lucas. I also know that on my 500SEL that has about 250,000 miles on the lower end and unknown mileage on the heads that when I start it without Lucas after sitting for 2 weeks or so it makes more noise (ticking, tapping, etc) then it does with Lucas. I have said many times, "You Do What Makes You Happy". If you think it won't help than don't use it, and save the money. If my experiences don't interest you, don't read my post. But I for one will use Lucas products and I will be happy about it.

Using synthetic oil alone has more benefits than any dino oil with any off the shelf additive. |

No experience with Lucas oil additives, but I do know that Mobil 1 has been in our dodge caravan 3.8L since new, with regular changes at 8K-10K intervals. It now has 150K on it and doesn't smoke, tick, knock, or make any other noise than what it ran like when new.
I also ran Mobil 1 in a F150 with the 5.0L since new, with similar change intervals. It had 100K on the clock when it was traded-in and also ran like new. I'm pretty confident that the synthetic oil was a big factor in the condition of those engines after the stated miles. I do run cheaper dino oils in the beaters that I run on occasion, but anything I have that doesn't leak alot gets synthetic.
