A Christmas diesel story

A few years ago I purchased a non-running 240D that was showing low mileage (low 100k). I pulled the head off the engine and found the #4 piston bad. Ended up rebuilding the engine (documented on here somewhere) and later sold it to my neice (who was around 17 at the time). She graduated from school and moved to Ashville, NC and has driven the car since then. Seems someone broke the window out and attempted to steal the radio so it has plastic over one of the windows. The oil pressure gauge went bad somewhere along the line and I'm sure the drivers side carpet is in poor condition. Anyway, she has talked her dad (my bro-in-law) into finding her another diesel MB. Well, the local independent has a 1987 300D with about 175k miles on it that I think bro-in-law is going to buy her for $3800. The car is in good condition and is years ahead in refinement compared to the 240D. Runs out good, no smoke, shifts good, a/c works and there are no unusual noises. In addition, it is a euro car (cloth seats). Too bad it is not a five speed with manual windows. This is going to be a big step up for the neice. Anybody interested in a '83 240D (auto) with a very good engine in it with only about 175k miles? The body has no rust but it is in dire need of a paint job and obviously needs a window replaced.

Any story that involves an MB diesel, is a good Christmas Story.

This story needed some touching up :

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a 87 300D, decked out with all the gear,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

He sprang to his get away sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night."

I should have mentioned that if I knew the car ('87 300D) would not become a part of the "martial assets" I would be purchasing it myself.

What do you think its worth as a negotiating start?

The $3,800 you mentioned, sounds reasonable to me.

There is a 190D in N FL with a 2.5turbo on CL for $4500. That'd be more fun but less comfortable. Dude has had it on there for ever, cash in hand I doubt he could turn down 4k.

They would take $1500 for the 240D. Keep in mind that I put close to $2k in it during the rebuild about 4 years ago. We will see how things go. If they end up getting the '87 for her I'll try to get some pics of the 240D on here. I would trust the car to drive anywhere. Right now it is in Ashville, NC.
