Mercedes junkyard finds.

1985 300Dt, 130k on the clock. Body is flawless, paint is still shiny, everything is there (recent acquisition for them, surely). Probably had some stupid issue like a vacuum problem with the trans.

I know what you mean...it always saddens me to see mint-ish cars in junkyards with relatively low miles. Often times, if these cars are somewhat rare, they go into the junkyard and leave the junkyard the same way - relatively intact.

I've seen Volvo diesels, MkI Vw Sciroccos, Type 44 (Audi 5000/Audi 100/200) Audis, and an ultra-rare Audi 4000 4E coupe in various pick a parts over the years, and all of them had almost all of their parts. Poor babies...

I think the worst junkyard find I've ever seen was a 1988 Alfa Romeo Milano Verde. Identical to mine, they made about 880 of them. It was completely and had recent head work done:
http://ranwhenparked.blogspot.com/2007/11/alfa-milano-verde-in-junkyard.html

Makes you wonder why people junk these.

Has anybody else noticed that there seems to be a very steady supply of W114/W115s in junkyards?

America - the throw away society.

This would never have happened in the Middle East, South America, or Africa, where cars like this are prized, and any effort would have been made to fix the issues and keep it running.

But here, someone stole the hood star off it, so it was time to junk the car.

Everyone knows a Mercedes Benz diesel without the hood star is like a cat without whiskers, anyway.

Man, that's sad to see an Alfa in the junkyard. I've seen one in recent years - a 164.

I've seen one W114 in my recent visits; a 220 Diesel. I saw two W108s yesterday (both 280SE/SELs) and I seem to always see at least 10 300Es or 190Es. Most of them are 20 years old, give or take. For an MB to be on the road for 20 years is amazing.

I very rarely see MORE than three W123s, and I have yet to see more than three W126 diesels in a junkyard. The W126s I see are almost always 420SELS and 560SELs, and seeing an SEC in the junkyard makes a part of me hurt inside

I often wonder what relegates these cars to the junkyard. Sometimes you'll get a car that is in good shape, but it might need a repair that economically doesn't make sense. It is undeniable that many of these cars we own aren't for those without deep pockets and a great love for the cars, or both.

164s, meh. What's sad is there's a junkyard here that used to have all sorts of Alfas, including a GTV, an Alfetta Sedan (rare in these parts), a couple of Fiat X1/9s, an MG-C, Saab Sonnetts, etc. Those cars are all gone. Another one had some Renault 4CVs, three Fiat 850s, an X1/9 and all those have been crushed as well. All of those cars (save for a wrecked Lancia) were restorable and fairly rare.

Yeah, in my opinion, a car should only be junked if it's hit beyond repair or something of the sort. Otherwise, somebody will pick up on it and fix it up. I've seen SO many cars that should never have ended up in a junkyard.

Another bad one was a 1980 Saab 900 Turbo (first year for the turbos).. I drove the car, was about to buy it, then the guy was driving it and the axle went, he junked it. Such a solid car otherwise and an axle isn't a big deal.

I regularly see W123s though there were none last time I went to Pick N' Pull. They did have a 300E with 434k on the clock (who knows if that's accurate) and a 300SD that was probably involved in a pileup (hit really hard in the rear, slightly in the front). I don't think I've ever seen more than one W126 at a time but they're regularly in there. 190s are everywhere.

I guess I'm not the only person here fascinated with junkyard finds? I have plenty more photos of MB junkyard finds.

P.S.-- hood stars ALWAYS seem to be missing. Too bad, I need one for my 300D.

P.S. II-- should we start a thread about diesel MB junkyard finds? If nothing else it could be a neat way for people to find parts.

Then, if it is no trouble, and if they are as good as this one is, please post up some of them in this thread, we would enjoy seeing them, thanks.

A few things:

You are most definitely NOT the only person who is fascinated by junkyard finds. I think about the cars in the junkyards when I pass by them, and how they started out as someone's "pride and joy" and were transformed into being junkyard heaps over the years. I wonder what histories each car has. Okay, I'll get my head out of the clouds now...

I think a junkyard finds thread would be AWESOME. I have posted similar threads on VWVortex when I find some great finds, and at least a few people find them helpful. If we have a CL thread, then a junkyard thread would be great.

And watch out - some junkyards don't allow cameras at their facilities.

I have yet to see hood star at the p'n'p. Few dash clusters. There are two local ones, zero Benz's at one, three 126's at the other all missing the front bumper, grille, head lights, parking lights. All gassers too. Lose count of the 190's.
New hood stars are pretty cheap.

This idea is worthy of a "sticky" at the top of the diesel section, if there is room, and the photos are good, if you ask me..

Well, here's a 1983 240D with 330k miles. Rusty and hit on the passenger side, everything else is there including the 4-speed.

1986 300E, most interior parts left (for you W124 300D guys), 434k on the clock:

Sorry, no photo of it but a 1984 300SD (behind the Porsche).. wrecked but the drivetrain seems all there, as is the interior. 258k or so:

There's also a W114/5 300D in there. No photo. From memory, the backseat is gone and the grille is gone, the rest is all there and the body's very straight. I think it's a '76 and if I remember right the odometer reads 80k. Whether that's 180k, 280k, 380k, etc, I don't know.

I think about that when I find cars that are abandoned. I really wonder what the original owner(s) would think if they saw the car now.
