Thanks guys. I haven't started on any of them. Car ran pretty good so I started my obsession with front-end/suspension stuff courtesy of Adam's Vogtland Spring thread back in March. Really, I was only gonna do new shocks. And then I got sucked into the performance springs thing. And then I found out she wasn't alignable, and then I started collecting parts and as of last week ended up with essentially a brand new front-end/suspension. Now I'm sweating that she won't survive long enough to justify the suspension rebuild. Although she's still running fine.

It is probably not a surprise, but I have a number of oil leaks to fix also. It is an 82 300D turbo with 181,000 miles. This is my first M/B and driving is FUN! I have put 2,000 miles on in the last six weeks. I think one of the bigger leaks is the oil filter to engine block. TANGOFOX007 said it wasn't that hard of a job (2 hours), and my mechanic friend also said I should be able to do it myself. (He has more faith in me than me do.) Anyway, can someone suggest a DIY article that gives instrutions? Also, I do need to wash the engine compartment so I can find the other leaks. Is there anything in particular I should watch out for when I wash it? I am planning on a $1.00 car wash at 3:00 AM.

Are there relatively easy/inexpensive to fix external leaks that I could prioritize? NOT mechanical - just want a heads up if I decide to pursue.
If you would post pictures of the oil-leak sources, it would be easy to instruct you on fixing on your 300D's oil leak sources.

Like you, I am wanting to address them. I will report on what I find but it is primarily on the intake side so, turbo oil drain, and air cleaner, I have already realized I need a new oil filler cap.
I noticed oil dribbling out from mine. When I looked, it didn't look like there was a gasket under it. Maybe I'll go look again. That's the only leak I've encountered so far.

Keeping these things leak-free is sort of a full time hobby. Once you get rid of all the leaks initially, keep the engine clean and keep looking. When you find one, fix it right away before they get out of hand and make a mess again.

How many miles are you talking about? Go into the signature section of the setup on this forum and list your car model and year and mileage. It will be helpful in answering your inquiries.

I have 312K on my 84 300D (500K Km). It leaks some oil but nothing catastrophic.

You can always add some UV Dye into the oil and check for leaks with a black light. Then you'll know exactly where they're coming from. I just did this on my 240.

Mine leaks some in all of the usual places. The worst leak when I got the car was from the Valve Cover Gasket. After that was fixed and the engine was cleaned/degreased several times. I found that the other leaks were easy to live with.
About every 2 months I spray on a mild degreaser somewhat like Simple Green and give the engine a rinse with the hose.
I have little wet spots but no pools do deal with on the drive way after a month or so.
