To good to be true? Alternator

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ALTERNATOR-1984-85-Mercedes-Benz-190D-2-2L-FREE-SHIP_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33573QQihZ015QQitemZ250199663255QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Everywhere Ive looked alternators are $100+. Is this a rip off or something.

just bought an ebay alternator from a seller called eagle auto electric. $100 shipped, 3 days from the west coast. Its an upgraded 65 amp to 80 amp remanned alternator. Seller has damn near 100% positive feedback on over 3000 sales, I concur. Nothing but happy with mine.

How often do these things go anyway?

If you have a spare, they never wear out. Murphy's law thing.

When I didn't have a spare, my '91 4matic lost the regulator (brushes) on Christmas Eve, 1996, in a snowstorm, 30miles from home with the family and presents stuffed in it. Oh, about 75,000miles at the time. Battery didn't last long, couldn't turn off the rear window heater or the HVAC with low battery, the buttons wouldn't respond. No alternator light if the brushes lose contact with the commutator, just no charge, the first light you see is the ABS or SRS light.

It is my opinion that Mercedes didn't put in large enough alternators through the mid-'90s, the alternators work pretty hard at night and with all of the blowers cooling/heating the cars. A spare regulator and an angle-screwdriver make great spares for an older 'Benz.

I have an odd problem my alternator started going out on my 1981 240d, so i went to the junkyard and got a new one. next week or so the light slowly started getting brighter and brighter until now its allways kind of dimly on. this has happened twice now, same thing happened with the old alternator.

I bought a rebuild 617 alternator from Eagle on EBay. Seemed to be a quality rebuild with good parts (such as the bearings). Price was around $100. Here, the price looks a little low. I'm thinking perhaps cheap Chinese or Indian bearings are being used. On the rebuilding, the usual thing wrong with these alternators are the brushes, the regulators, and then the bearings, in that order. You can get a few replacements of brushes/regulators before the bearings go - then its total rebuild time.

You might get low quality bearings in any rebuilt.
I have my alternator apart right now due to a grinding rear bearing. The tag on the alternator has Remanufactured Bosch North America on it. Both bearings are made in CHINA.
This company has voltage regulators for $18 and the Bosch ones for around $36 + $6.34 shipping to may address.

Should. Many 240 alts have been replaced with 300's, more amps?
Ken300D, the brushes are part of the regulator.
When I replaced mine, I used a local independent parts store, around $90 I think. I also had to use my existing pulleys. Use an impact wrench, and save the woodruff key.
