The torque converter must be unbolted from below. I believe there is a dust cover which must be removed to do this.

I suggest purchasing a haynes book or the Factory service manual.

getting manuals

Tom,
He's in germany, they're not going to have Haynes manuals. He needs what's called a Querschnitt, which is like Haynes, or the factory repair manual.

They don't sell them with the same freedom and availability that we find that stuff.

As you are underneath the car look in the area where the engine and transmission bolt up. You will seen a thin metal cover (or an opening if the cover is missing) at the front/bottom of where they bolt together on the transmission side. Remove the cover if it is there by removing the two 10mm fasteners. After you remove this cover you look in the hole while rotating the engine (direction of travel only) and you should see some 13mm fasteners in there. There should be three pairs of them. Remove these fasteners. You have unbolted the torque converter from the flywheel when you have these out. Next you will want to disconnect all the linkage and fasteners betweent he engine and transmission. Try to slide the torque converter away from the engine. You want to try to let it stay with the transmission when you slide the engine forward if you can.

Do your mechanic a favor and try to loosen the crankshaft bolt prior to pulling the engine from the car if you can. It takes a 27mm deep socket to get to it.

Come back with more questions as they arise.

he bought the 80 300 D that was on here a few months back. the REALLY clean ebay car from NC... it's really a shame that he is rebuilding the motor. I bet we could walk him through getting it running well. but it was so poorly maintained, when it was last on the road 11 years ago (the car has tons of blowby while just cranking the motor), that I understand him wanting to start from scratch.
arne, click on my name and send me a pm with your address, and I can send you a Haynes manual if you can't find one in german.

now the engine is out of the car,i was spending around 6 hours by my self to pull it.
by the way , there is no way to pull the engine self, because there is absolut no space to get the to upper bolts out witch are holding the trans.but now i can overhall also the seals from the trans.witch are leaking.i found one valve ont he exhaust system witch is complyt closed with a lot of **** from the exhaust (dust) bild up over the years.
what is that valve for ? on my German 240 D i dont have that.
excuse my bad english !
best regards Arne

The top bolts could be accessed by two or three long extensions and alot of cussing , What i suggest you check while the engine is out, starter and maybie replace the waterpump and timing chain. Make sure you get a new oil pump for this engine, it is Very important to do this! while youve got the transmission out, replace the flex discs if they need to be relplaced if those go out, you will have a very bad problem on your hands. if you have any more questions email me at cervanz@gmail.com -gary

The valve is probably the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve. It routes exhaust back into the intake in order to reduce peak combustion temperatures and eliminate the production of oxides of nitrogen. If you aren't required to run it, I would suggest disabling or removing the EGR system, since it cruds up the intake.

Arne-

There is a set of numbers stamped into the case just above the transmission oil pan on the passenger's side. You should see a number in the series like 722.1xx or 722.3xx. If you can give us those we can determine what transmission you have. I wouldn't be too concerned yet with the R115 number you see- that probably will have been the series when the 722.1xx transmission was created ( correct if yours is a non-turbo car)
