smoke color

still having the hesitation problem since the part is $491, but I am wondering about the smoke. While the car does this little bit of hesitation that it does, I can see alot of gray to white smoke out the exhaust. So my question is what is the smoke meaning, what is black smoke as opposed to white?

Black smoke is overfueling, white smoke can either be a cold engine or water.

You can get blue with incomplete combustion as well but they smell different, one like burnt oil the other like unburnt fuel. What is the part?

the part is the throttle position sensor. there isnt an oil leak, and the motor doesnt burn any at all. it looks mostly grayish in color. it only happens around 2200 rpm and MOSTLY when the engine is under 80 degrees.

TPS or something else?

I believe it it his '96.

Mine occasionally has a similar problem, but at idle and parking lot speeds. You push gently on the footfeed (since you're in a parking lot) but nothing happens. The engine continues to idle normally, doesn't stall. Push a little harder and something happens, the car accelerates more than you wish but you catch it before you crash into something. Then it's OK until the next time.

I had thought TPS also, $500 part until I added a ScanGaugeII to my car. One of the things that it will display is the throttle position, in a 0 to 100 scale. I accidentally discovered that the throttle position continues to read normally during the lack-of-response incidents. That suggests that the problem is not in TPS but rather in the IP actuator (is there such a thing? I just assumed it into existence). Of course it will turn out to be even more expensive....

I'll report more as I figure it out.

Jeremy

These are known for sucking air on the fuel system O-rings = acceleration dead spot.
Replace the O-rings on your fuel strainer, and check the fuel heater for leak.
Note: The plastic fuel lines may also be sucking air.

EDIT Correction: Fuel Pre-Filter, not strainer.

Have a great day.

Note:
I need your VIN# to verify correct parts, fuel lines and heater/thermostat.

Fuel Pre-Filter Number 26 in the attached picture.
Top of the housing your metal bolt on fuel filter mounts to, there is a plastic fuel line running into it.
Note: there are two O-rings to be replaced.

The strainer is in the tank at the outlet (supply line), the fuel pre-heater/thermo is in the cyl head; follow the short line connected to the top of the pre-filter back toward the head. It is a very low fail part.

You've done the simple stuff like cleaning everything and then using a bright light to look for any fuel leaks, bubbles or wetness at the fuel filter housing and IP?
