617 n/a vs turbo, Could you tell me the difference?

A guy I know is talking about hooking me up with and 82 300cd na, can this car be turbo charged? and what are the internal differences? Is it worth the trouble? I'm sure y'all get this all of the time, and any old thread info would be great. Parish

I kinda figured that, but I was wondering if they would come apart or something crazy like that.

Major internal differences on the motors. But what you could do, though, is pull that motor and sell it and find a turbo motor and do the swap. I've not done that, but I believe the bolt patterns and things like that make it a pretty easy swap.

The turbo 617 uses a different camshaft with more lift, different crankshaft (with more hardening in it I believe), and also has internal differences in the block, such as different oiling, and I think it also has more webbing in the casting around the mains. It's better to get hold of a complete turbo engine than to try to make one turbo, as they tend not to last.

I had an 85 300d turbo that had a major problem, it was dual exhaust, one out the back, and one out the valve cover! #4 was done!!! Do not want any thing like that!!! The car was worn out all the way around, so l let it go, as I had no title.

major internal diffrences between the forced induction engine and the naturally asperated engine. one major diffrence is the cooling and lubrication diffrences. not only is the radiator larger but it has an expansion tank, also there are oil squirters under the pistons to cool them down and keep them from cracking. The crankshaft is hardened and the camshaft is abit more agressive, also the injectors have a higher pop rating and the injection pump has an aneroid to increase fuel only After boost comes up, without that aneroid you will be smoking at idle no matter what.Basically, get an engine set up for a turbo, or deal with the N/A engine.

I appreciate the input, as I was wondering about my options, but I realize that turboing a n/a is a purely destructive venture. Thanks again!

The NA engine is still a very good engine, just less powerful than most people want these days.

Didn't you really mean "The NA and turbo engines are less powerful than most people want these days."?

Are you sure it's an 82?

An 82 would have had a turbo engine from the factory.

An M-pump (second picture) is a different type of injection pump only used outside of the USA on the OM617 (first picture).
