mpg question

Drove from LA to Tuscon at about 80MPH. Got 22MPG. is this reasonable or the sign of a worn engine. Car is maintained to spec (valves lash, IP timing, acceptable chain stretch, new filters, etc) and has about 220k miles. Car burns oil, over 1 qt/1000. Most noticeable on start up first acceleration, initial cloud of gray/white smoke. I bought a Harbor freight compression tester and will eventually perform a compression test. May also try putting each cyl at TDC and pumping air in to listen where it leaks (exhaust, intake or crankcase).

Doesn't sound too bad for the speed.

Couple of years ago, I drove my 83 300D from Tucson back to Virginia and averaged 26-27, but I was drivng much more conservatively, 65-70mph.

Assuming this was in your 300D, that is not unreasonable, given the condition of the car and its rather un-aerodynamic shape. 300Ds rarely get better than 27 and not at 80 mph either.

Ye, this was in the 300D.

I measuered 27mpg on a half tank refill calc coming back. Driving at 80mph. I guess i shouldn't complain. Measuring mpg this way is not too accurate though since the basis was just 10gallons. Unfortunately though I'm loosing oil at 1qt/800 miles. Some oil loss is found on the ground after parking. These cars are hard to reseal up tight.

I agree with everyone......+22 mpg for a 300D at 80mph is acceptible for that body style. Remember that wind resistance increased exponentially with speed and that blunt nose is not helping. Oil Consumption could be better but I have had new cars at highway speeds lose that much. Crankcase pressure can easily exceed the sealing ability of old seals at those speeds. I think you are leaking it more while driving fast than burning it. Then you notice a puddle after it sits for a while.

Mileage is just fine, I'd be more concerned about your oil consumption.

Unless you go on ebay thats about all you can expect. The 85's have a little higher gearing so you might have done 23.

Yeah, those ebay cars seem to get 30 or even 40 mpg.

When figuring mileage you also have to consider the ULSD fuel. Everybody's MPG dropped when that junk came on the market. My '85 td went from 29 to 27 mpg. I rarely go past 70 MPH though. Meanwhile the F250 powerstroke went form 21 to 18 mpg. I don't check the 240 but I'm sure the MPG dropped on it as well.

Cheers,

Bill

Back a few years ago one sunny day I was minding my own business keeping watch on the ships store as my boss went to lunch. Every day I parked the SDL in the exact same spot out front, everyone who worked there kind of had a spot and God help you, if you took it! Anyway those Ebay people really exist, someone with a pretty decent auto 240D comes walking into the store trying to find out who owns the SDL. To make a long story short he swore up and down that his 240D got 40-45 mpg. They walk among us!

I can believe somebody would claim that sort of mileage sitting behind a screen but to actually say it face to face takes a "special" sort of person.

An automatic 240 must be the slowest car known to exist. I've never driven one but my stick drives like a loaded tractor trailer.

Cheers,

Bill
